Tim Minchin and Band. A priviledge to have been there.

Sometime last week a tweet from Tim Minchin advertised a concert at 100 Club in London for which there were 42 tickets remaining. Two were purchased. The gig was advertised as a humourless affair just music. The venue was a quaint throwback maybe 30 years. A basement under Oxford street with few chairs and two bars, but most importantly a stage. A curious entry procedure which led to a wait of 30 minutes in a slow moving queue due to each person being ticked off a paper list. Beer was 4£ pint, very reasonable. The venue is constructed like a rectangle meaning that it is impossible to be far from the stage.

Tim Minchin came on and announced that this gig was more of an experiment and that they only had 7 songs, he then confessed that he had written one more this afternoon, so eight songs. The music began. The music was simply amazing, enjoyable, whatever…..I felt privileged to have been there at the start of what might become big. No ego’s present. The band and Tim drinking afterwards with the few crowd members remaining and happy to shake my hand and briefly chat, with no eyes-rolled-to-heaven kind of look. Humourless ? I don’t think so. No humour intended but he is just a really funny man. Lots of humour but none that overshadowed the music.

My photos are rubbish taken with the I phone but no-one minded those who brought proper cameras along. I shall spend tomorrow looking to see when he is playing again . This might be big and we were there at the start. That I like.

Dead Fox was not what we expected to find

A sunday afternoon in the rain in Beddington Park Croydon. The aim was getting a motorised boat to work on one of the rivers that runs through. However one is taught that it is important to look out for obstructions such as reeds, sandbanks and now it seems dead foxes. Quite near the edge there was what looked like a young fox, dead in the water almost submerged. The other inhabitants of the park included some noisy herons who refused my kind invitations to sit still at the top of their tree and stop sqwarking so i might humbly photograph them. Egyptian geese that sat in the water surrounded by various debris from croydon, plastic water bottles etc.

One of the advantages of having a daughter  in the Cayman Islands diving is that I get to see some amazing photos. This one was taken yesterday on the beach in Grand Cayman and the story goes that this eel was spotted in the sea and  someone dragged it out. It chose a bad meal choice and I have done that before, but this beats even a Brentford burger….her blog is http://www.seniorbushe.wordpress.com

Those clever at this hour will notice the similarity in our blog titles………there is a story. She was called SeniorBushe by friends of her younger brother………..so hence her blog title………..I just added a little bit on as her father…………

Yrsa Sigurðardóttir and Icelandic Crime

Two of my recent visitors have been from Iceland and there is a phenomenon that is growing fast, that of the UK selling large quantities of Scandinavian and Icelandic crime fiction. The great Stieg Larsson started things off with maybe the best trilogy that will ever be written about the Girl with The Dragon Tattoo. Jo Nesbo continued things along with a series of superb novels and now an Icelandic authoress, Yrsa Siguradottir continues on.

Currently I am reading the second novel from her, and having read her most recent novel first, am working backwards. Her writing cannot be praised too highly. Not only does she convey an extraordinary complexity of plot but she captures the characters so well. Surprisingly the books are also humourous, with some descriptions of her secretary/assistant Bella, being described as a Gothic tugboat, opening the mind to what exactly she looks like. The other people who deserve praise are the translators of all these novels as they read in English as fluently as one imagines they would having been written by a native english speaker. The current book is called (English translation by Philip Roughton, Ashes to Dust, UK:July 2010).

Help For Heroes

Every so often one of your children does something so surprising that it was beyond the probablity of prediction. In this case 21 yr old son who during his 3 years at Exeter University has become head of their charity operations was successful in obtaining a place in the Bike ride London to Istanbul in aid of Help for Heroes. My small job is to try and get as much sponsorship for him as possible. Hence this post.

In short why not click here and donate something. Does not matter how small.http://www.justgiving.com/Charles-Bushe

This is his description of what he is doing.

My name is Charles and i am a student at the University of Exeter. I am part of a team of 14 cyclists who are going to cycle over 4,400 km, through the heat of the summer, across Europe from London to Istanbul.  Although some people may suggest we are mad to attempt it, we are doing it for a very worthwhile cause.

We are raising money for ‘Help for Heroes’ charity and aim to raise at least £20,000. I stress that this is our minimum aim, as we hope to raise as much as possible and hopefully much more than this. We will be raising approximately 34p per cyclist, per km.
We will be cycling around 120km every day, and going through 8 different countries before eventually reaching our desination in Turkey.
We are in the process of raising money by doing a multitude of events; for example in the next few weeks alone we have a 100 hour cycle, many evening events, and even a team leg wax! However the money we hope to raise is a large sum and as such we would much appreciate any money that people are willing to donate.
Any sponsorship that you could donate would be much appreciated not only by myself, but by the entire team and the charity itself! The link below is to my ‘justgiving’ page and as such goes straight to the charity.

Snow in UK. Not so bad in the south as they say

Despite warnings of snow related doom in the south it seems we got off mildly. Which means the understanding of the chaos at Heathrow with two thirds of flights cancelled, or diverted to Prestwick, complex to understand. Essentially we had maybe 1-2 inches of snow saturday night which has all melted either sunday or monday. anyway rather than wittering a few photos to remind us of the weather as it was. I wish it all had stayed longer but then I am biased as wanted the photos.

Carshalton Athletic 3 Lincoln City 1

Without doubt one of the best games I have seen this season. Not the most exciting nor skilful but the workrate and belief of the Carshalton players that they could beat Lincoln from the Conference was there from the start. Lets be frank, Lincoln were appalling. Little or no skill and little perhaps none desire to win the game. The Ryman Premier league table will tell you that Carshalton are not the best side, a sort of mid-table berth but with a few bad results of late. Yet watching them one would imagine that they were Blue Square south level. They battled, they defended well and in fact nick Hamann their keeper did not make a save all night. All their goals were good. Paul Vines must be man of the match as he scored all of them and the thrid goal was an exquisite finish from a one on one. I am not sure where David Holdsworth can go from here. His players are either very poor or very disinterested, and tonight a cocktail of both.

The crowd of 488 was good and about double the recent home gates. The away support from lincoln was quiet and would fill a small minibus. This however was Carshalton’s night and they fully deserved it. In the next round they are away to either Newport county or Worksop and i would not bet against them winning that too. Highlights of the game? Josh Gowlings hair, David Holdsworth expressions, the look of absolute horror on the faces of the Lincoln city directors sitting in the back of the small main stand. They must wonder what next. Maybe I can give them some advice. Find 11 players who want to play football, put in 90 minutes of effort and play for the club. This is one night I am glad to be a Brentford fan and not a Lincoln city fan.

One exception and that is Josh Gowling. One notices him by the hair. He came on as a late secons half substitute but put more work in in a few minutes than most team mates had all game. He also played with a smile on his face, and he apologised to the away fans gathering like a small pack of vultures near the tunnel at the end when the players departed.

MoVember

For some inexplicable reason I agreed to grow this moustache for the charity this month. I truly hate it and have visions of pounds of food embroiled in the moustache all month. However you can slightly ease the pain with a small donation to the charity

Mouse Catching

That sort of interesting evening. 10 pm and the 11 year old just in bed and suddenly a shout of ” mouse”. But how does a field mouse get upstairs? It took one hour and three people and 2 cats to corner the mouse. Shadow was the successful cat, Bolt a failure. But in the end shadow caught the mouse and would not let it go, growling at me. options are carry cat downstairs or try and get mouse off cat myself. In the end shadow dropped the mouse, that was quite good at playing dead, and I managed to catch it and carry it outside. where it gave me one of those stunned looks sitting on the pavement. Anyway mouse gone. But how upstairs? Does it have friends there? If it has been living there what did it eat? all too much for midnight…
