Florence in Italy

An interesting day and its only halfway through. A few days ago I made a strategic decision that I would not travel to florence on saturday, as would be sensible, but travel on sunday so that I might watch the Brentford v Notts County game, which had given Brentford fans some slight hope of a play-off position. The game ended 0-0 and with it Bees chances of the play-offs. My penalty for this travel crime was that I had to fly out of Luton airport on a 7 am Easyjet flight. Working backwards this entailed getting up at 3.30am and a taxi journey to the airport. The taxi must have taken the most circuitous route to the airport known to mankind. Maybe the sat-nav calculated the shortest route but it was a strange one. The driver was a pleasant Romanian soul but in sited on talking to me all the journey and ended up by asking me how he might stop biting his nails………….

Luton airport is a horrible place. Where they can charge you for something they do and where they cannot they still do anyway. Firstly, this financial frenzy began with having to pay to be dropped off by a taxi, £1 ok not going to bankrupt anyone but not necessary and not kind. This donation to Luton airport allows 10 minutes of drop off time. To exceed this 10 minutes costs a mere penalty of 80£. Now at 5 am the airport was not so busy but I suspect there are days when it would be seriously busy and a queue might develop on exit to pay this fee, and suppose the queue took longer than 10 minutes and everyone was being fined 80£? In the airport the usual selection of average to hideous food at extottionate prices, all being sold from kiosks with stupid names. A fee again to buy those plastic bags to put one’s liquids in. A fee to go through the sensible paced security ( called fast-track, but I suspect the advertising standards authority might withhold a case against them). People everywhere pushing in, standing and blocking anyone passing and folks looking dead on the seats, you get the picture. Put simply,I hate Luton airport.

Easyjet flight to Pisa was on time taking off but late landing as French air traffic controllers were refusing something or other, work most likely. Now arriving at Pisa for a novice might be complex, but I remembered the system. Buy a ticket from a miserable mute man in a box who charges an extra fee plus the cost of the train ticket to Florence. The timetable advertised a train at 11.03 and dozens of folks stood waiting and waiting and waiting………never came. The station I can tell you for sure is not twinned with either Kew Gardens nor Wisley. Despite having a similar amount of foliage growing between the tracks. Everything looked run down and tatty and sad.  So we all clambered aboard what looked liked a first world war relic, a two carriage train covered in graffiti, nice graffiti but still graffiti, and went off at no more than 5 mph to Pisa Central. There are no signs at Pisa Central. Again grateful to have done this before. Found a train going to SMN, which is one of the Florence stations, but what confuses many folks is that Florence is called firenze. The train was packed. There is some rumour of a strike by Trenitalia but the real problem would be actually being able to tell the difference when they are on strike. The trains are old and this one was packed. There were a curious mixture of passengers. One couple caught my eye and also the camera on my blackberry. A younger woman who had clearly spent many hours putting on her make up, the blue make up around both eyes made her look as though she had gone 12 rounds in a boxing match. Her clothes and also those of what I presumed to be her mother can only be described in terms such as this. Imagine going to a car boot sale and being foxed not only to buy but to put on all remaining items of clothing. None of whom match any other item, style nor colour. Totally bizarre. Mother had a pair of glasses on that Austin Powers and maybe Joe 90 would be proud of. They covered essentially her whole head and making matters even more curious were pink. Covering her head was maybe a good strategy as her hair looked like it had been set on fire then microwaved and painted red as a final punishment to all non-colour blind people. From her ears hung what can only be described as awful silver looking blackberries. and she spent the whole journey sitting on the edge of her seat perched like a small crow. I have seen circus folks looking more sartorially elegant. The end of this part of the story is arriving with suitcase, and coat at 1 pm at the Congress centre. A 9 and half hour journey.

I have now taken my humble belongings to the hotel and again a magical extra fee payable only in cash! 3 euros a night city tax, but why only in cash? The hotel is fine, Malaspina, stayed there before 2 years ago during the ash cloud debacle.

Carshalton 3 Tooting 0

On the face of it a straightforward game. A routine 3-0 win against a demoralised and dejected and frankly awful looking Tooting side, with a routine hat-trick from Paul vines. The crowd of around 280 was a little higher than in recent weeks that maybe reflects a good run of being unbeaten in now 5 games. But there is a backdrop to all this and as usaul can only give a personal opinion. On arrivial at around 2pm at the ground a leaflet was thrust more than given to me extolling the need for all Carshalton fans to boycott the final home game of the season in two weeks. This as a protest against their manager / owner Paul dipre. A litany of reasons are given on the A3 piece of paper that range from bad results, failure to talk to the fans enough and many more between. When reading Twitter and other social media one reads not about the good run of late but this litany of complaints against Dipre. what I have seen in the 5 games that I have attended this season is a good team that I have chosen to come and watch over other non-league teams, because they play good football and give 100% effort. This is what I saw today, a superb hat-trick from Paul Vines, who also incidentally you will see in one of the photos defending his goal from corners and free-kicks. On the terraces I heard not a single shout against the manager all game? So is this all helpful? In my opinion sadly not. The fans should get behind their team and not effectively penalise them which is what their actions achieve. Furthermore to do this via some silent leaflet and to hear nothing in the ground suggests a little dissonance in their actions. No one can deny that today Carshalton were good. Maybe the fans ought to give Dipre more time and more encouragement. Relationships have broken down and one suspects that for all parties to meet halfway might be the optimum solution.

The game itself. It was clear from the start that Tooting were dejected and well on their way back to Ryman South. It was the worst team I have seen at this level for a while and rarely did they look like scoring. The photos tell the story really.

Carshalton 2 Hastings 0

sometimes one goes to a football game and it sort of restores ones faith in real football. A chiily day with rain being threatened. A Ryman League premier game that was kind of lower mid-table. Carshalton being one place above Hastings and both potentially in danger of filling the last relegation place unless form improved. Crowd of 203 folks were there. judging by the numbers on the terraces at 2.59 around 202 were in the clubhouse bar. The game was an interesting one. Carshalton throughout were the better side and were well organised. I was particularly interested to see how they played as their owner manager Paul dipre has come under serious critscism in the media. Essentially folks saying that he should walk away from managing and keep to owning the club. The problem is that this is thrid time I have seen Carshalton this season and this is the third win I have witnessed. they looked good and well organised and worked hard. In their main striker Paul Vines they have a good finisher at this level and their keeper nick Hamaan was playing his 100th game for them today, and he is good.

The firt half saw no goals however two goals in the second half both poachers chances from vines won the game. Hastings may feel that they were unlucky as Hamaan made 2 good saves and they saw a goal disallowed for offside. But this was a fair result. The photos below tell only some of the story.

  1. The Hastings keeper was yellow carded for a foul on vines outside the box, and should have been sent off. The photo clearly showed that he did not get the ball and did get the man
  2. Why is a Hastings forward on his face in the penalty area as they take a free kick?
  3. Enough shirt and shorts pulling miseed by the referee that would have warranted a number of cards
  4. Was the referee Paul Scholes in disguise?

Anyway enjoy. For me Paul Dipre seems a decent manager based on what I have seen but I suspect that others disagree.

Brentford 2 Rochdale 0

The best that can be truthfully said for this game was that at least Brentford got 3 points. The game was played on a warm sunny afternoon and other than a superb headed goal 5 minutes from time from Clayton Donaldson, there was little or nothing to admire.

I don’t like criticising other football teams but Rochdale were poor. They were poor in the effort they applied, poor in their technical skills and in fact were the worst footballing side I have seen this season. I lost count of the misplaced passes and shots that went over the stadium roof or straight out of play. The only player who could defend Marcus Holness, went off injured in the second half and had a most peculiar hairstyle , like a sort of gothic cockerel. Nil Points for style. In fact I would be amazed if they escape relegation.

Neither midfield did much all game. In fact there was more movement in the respective technical areas from Uwe Rosler and John Coleman than from their respective teams. This was really a dreadful game of football and one hopes that few neutrals were in attendance. To make matters worse Adam Forshaw went off injured with what he reported on Twitter was a fractured jaw. End of the season for him. Jake Bidwell had another excellent game and one hopes we can sign him.

Uwe Rosler did not announce today that he had a master plan, recent ones include giving 2 goals away to Sheff United and Orient respectively, and blaming Crawley Town for a Brentford loss…..I guess the team was our best team out there. No-one played badly. Richard Lee did not have a save to make all game. The only on target effort from Rochdale was in fact the probable elbow that broke Adam Forshaw’s jaw.

So three points were nice, the cheeseburger at Macdonalds was nice, there was somewhere to park and it was warm. So why grumble. The season for Brentford is clearly over. Surely we cannot get relegated from this position of 50 points, no chance of promotion. Some nondescript games coming along.

Clinton Morrison made his debut for the last 10 minutes and for me contributed to the goal with his movement off the ball. So we honour him with an I phone photo.

Fabrice Muamba – News Update

During the day there have been a few short updates that only state that he remains critically ill in ITU. Nothing more tangible than that however an important aspect is that is it being reported that it took two hours to get his heart going again. Cardiologists on TV are reporting what we suspected last night that they are thinking along the lines of HOCM as a potential cause ( hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy). This is a disorder in which part of the heart, the main pumping chamber the left ventricle, has a thickened wall. This causes many things but maybe the most common is that the heart becomes liable to serious totally unpredictable arrhytmias and cardiac arrest. The other aspect to hope is that no part of the body was deprived of oxygen for too long ( brain, kidneys etc). Anyway lets be positive and hope that things turn out better than we might have hoped 24 hours ago.

On a more positive footballing note anyone watching Real Madrid v Malaga would have seen an equalising goal from a free kick in the 92nd minute that was superb. Well worth watching on any catch TV. One of the best goals I have seen this season. Jose Mourinho was not amused

Orient 2 Brentford 0

On arriving home from this game I was about to enter into a full-scale rant but the events around Muamba are so much more important. Nevertheless this was an abysmal performance by Brentford. There was little effort, leadership or anything positive. A huge number of fans braved the Central line to Brisbane Road and were frankly let down. £25 to get in was the first unpleasant surprise. The quality of Brentford’s football was the second. The ground itself is a curious affair. Anyone who cares can look on my football grounds website http://www.footballgroundz.co.uk and see what it used to be like. Now it has housing developments on each corner and the main stand is a mixture of football stand, medical polyclinic and offices. People sit on their balconies and watch the football for free from the corner of the ground.

What can I say about the game? Orient worked harder, were an average side and deserves their win. Harlee Dean the central defender for Brentford was dreadful, but none were much better. Simon Moore the keeper seemed allergic to catching the ball. Before the game Uwe Rosler told us he had a master plan to beat Orient. I can only imagine that the first part of this plan resembled a cunning plan from Baldrick, to gift the opposition two goals. The second part of this masterpiece- not, was to then take off the only two players who looked like making anything happen. I am not a fan of Niall McGinn, but today he seemed to resemble being in the right place a few times, and maybe our best player Saido Berahino, were taken off. Their replacements did zero all second half.

The main stand where Bees fans were also resembled a derelict ground. Many seats had been pulled out or off long ago, replacements were randomised to colour and type ( wood or plastic) or simply not replaced. Appalling for a club that charges £25 a seat.

Anyway confirmation that Brentford have gone backwards this season under Rosler. Not all or maybe many, agree with me, but thats my opinion, right or wrong. Two of our best players left the club, effectively our only strikers, the replacements none of them have gone down a storm. Some of our best players have hardly figured this season,Bean and Weston. We have not developed a team partially because we are full of loan players. end of rant. Also end of me going to away games this season.

The Muppet Movie is fantastic

When it was suggested that taking 11 yr old and 10 yr old friend to the cinema to see the Muppet movie, this was not high on my excitement index for the weekend. However what a great movie. Fun all the way through, some great lines and the odd decent song too. Absolutely loved it. Other than that a mixed weekend. Brentford v Sheff Utd was a real dissapointment. Big crowd, well for Brentford it was, 7500, lots of noisy away fans and the game started well for Bees. But two bad defensive errors gave the game away and Bees comfortably lost 2-0 to a decent though not scintillating team. This now ends the season for Bees. even with their best efforts relegation would be impossible as would a play off position. The weather over the weekend however has been fantastic which is fortunate as the gas bill arrived that was less than fantastic. A bill for a 4 bedroomed house where we used half the amount of gas as in the preceeding 12 months, yet our bill was doubled……….

Dusk Arrives over Tooting

Yoevil 2 Brentford 1

There are always defining moments in the season and today was one of those. Brentford are no better than they were last season at this time, and arguably worse. At that stage the crowd and team were solidly behind Nicky Forster. Today made me realise what a waste of time and money it is currently to watch Brentford. The perspective around this is that I used to go to all away games and often to work my work around where they were playing. Now I do not plan any more driving away games this  season. Why? Well a consistent facet of Brentford this season has been that they have been beaten by every team with a greater work ethic, even when that team is technically inferior. Exampled by today. Yoevil are no Brazil but will probably survive relegation this season and seem to function well as a small club with crowds around 4000. Brentford took the lead early in the first half with a deflected free kick from Sam Saunders, Yoevil came out fast from the traps in the second half, scored a wonderful goal and then got the winner with a scrappy own goal 5 minutes from time. Unlucky? Maybe? got what they deserved ? Probably.

Team selection was wrong. Donaldson should not be playing. He has had a miserable season and looks out of sorts. McGinn did some running but his quality was very poor today. The midfield lacked the bite that maybe Bean might have given. Tactics were awful , hoof the ball and then hoof it again. Tactics never changed even when Yoevil clearly changed theirs. Uwe Rosler needs to depart. He is not and will not be the answer. Sure, it can wait till end of season but he seems unable to put together a consistent team, motivate them to play out of their skin and seems to have fallen out with players who could have played a part today. No sign of Bean or Weston. Why? Crowds are poor at Griffin Park for a reason. Results are awful and  home peformances mostly dire.

I cannot help but think that Martin Allen would do a better job.

So in summary a waste of 4 hrs 30 mins driving, about 260 miles, costing £35 plus £19 to get in plus £3 programme plus 10£ food. Total waste = £67 and a day of my life. But I have decided that Uwe Rosler must depart Brentford.

Met Police 4 Horsham 1

Brentford were too far away at Scunthorpe today after 2000 miles driving in the last 2 weeks, so a local game was needed. Met Police V Horsham.  decent enough game. A mere 9£ to get in and 1.50 for programme. Burger and choc bar only 3£. Bargain made even better by winning the golden goal competition and coming home with 20£. Very friendly to watch football here. Recommend to neutrals. Car parking onsite too. The game was mostly one-sided but Horsham did take the lead but could not defend and it is was clear why they had a negative goal difference of 45 before today. They will be relegated. for some of the photos here a sort of ” what happened next” might be needed. Enjoy.

Met Police score first goal

Mansfield 5 Darlington 2

As was in the area on a work trip I decided to drop in and watch the game. Mansfield is always a friendly place to watch a game and usally half way decent football too. £16 to get in at the away end. Pastie and Mars Bar for tea. The game was frenetic. Darington looked like scoring whenever they went forward and conceding whenever the ball was in their box. The Mansfield striker Matt Green got a hat trick, a typical centre forward who has scored over 20 goals this season and one can see why. Turns out that the darlington team in the main are just youngsters and they did exceptionally well. Great goal from Macready. Keeper did well.

Photos below to give a flavour of the game. Not really up to usual standard as floodlights not strong and had to use ISO speed 6400 with only 1/250th speed. Anyway enjoy. Have a look at the penalty. Mansfield must have been super confident he would score as none of their players enter the box at all! In fact where are they?

My claim to fame is that I had breakfast in a small hotel near the Millenium Stadium with the grandparents of Marc Bridge-Wilkinson, when Brentford were playing Port Vale there. Of course he scored and always did against Brentford.  in case anyone interested my footbal grounds website, which is going to have a a massive overhaul soon is at http://www.footballgroundz.co.uk

Good luck to Darlington. I shall buy some shares tomorrow.
