Best Photographs of 2014

Around this time each year I sit down and try and sort out my best 13 photographs of the year to make up my annual calendar. Not easy. This year is easier than some. These are the said photos. Each has a reason for being there and each has a story. Please feel free to share this post and this blog with your friends and colleagues.

Lewis Emmanuel ex-Brentford player jailed for armed robbery Skelmanthorpe post office

Not many Bees fans will remember him as he had a loan spell back in 2007 for 2 months. His claim to fame that I just about recall was that he ” got lost” on the M25 and missed an away game at Morecambe. Brentford manager then was the infamous Terry Butcher.

A few more folks will have heard of him today as he has been jailed for 8 years for his part in an armed robbery in Yorkshire. Together with an accomplice they entered the post office masked and ordered customers to lay down on the floor including a 3 year old girl with her mother and grandmother.  Essentially held up a post office with a fake firearm. The end of a football career for him. He clearly had good talent at some stage as he played for many decent league 1 and occasional championship teams, but spent most of his career in and out of Luton town.

The story is an unhappy one as reported of a player clearly with talent who went the wrong way. His defence counsel said some of the biggest losers in all this will be his 3 children aged 10, 5 and 4 years.

Hereford United. Please read this and support . Great effort by fans

Hereford are famous for many things including FA cup wins when non-league. They have been a league club for many years and then fell into the conference a few years ago. They now find themselves in desperate straights. A decent club in an area with a small catchment so crowds rarely were over 3-4,000 even when gaining promotion to league one.

Today by voluntarily asking fans to pay extra and season ticket holders to pay 10£, they have raised £6,711 at the home game today and £3000 in the 24 hours before that from fans. They need to find 35K in the next 14 days to pay a PAYE bill.  The good news though is that they beat Cambridge United 1-0 today in that game.

Donations can be made here

Average crowds have been falling also over the last few years:

  • 2012-13  1793
  • 2011-12   2553
  • 2010-11  2516
  • 2009-10  2138
  • 2008-09  3421

FLYBE Experience

Having flown FLYBE for the first time it is reasonable to pen a few thoughts. The flight was Gatwick to Inverness and took maybe an hour as opposed to 8 hours on the train for similar cost. The plane was less than a third full with 32 seats occupied out of 92. The plane was an Embraer 175 which is not unlike a small Airbus 319. Comfortable and clean and a good experience. Why would I not use then again? Not so many routes and airports for me, having to pay for food is irritating ( surely a few pounds on the ticket and give away coffee and biscuits?) and the size of handluggage allowed is smaller than for example British Airways.

Flybe is a British low-cost regional airline group based in Exeter, Devon, England and operates over 180 routes to 65 European airports and is Europe’s largest regional airline, carrying over 7 million passengers during 2013.

The Flybe Group is a public company and employs around 2,600 people.
Launched in 1979 under the name Jersey European Airways, the airline was later renamed British European (BE), and then Flybe. It took over BA Connect in 2007 to create Flybe Group

Inverness Airport

A small regional airport with a few flights direct to Gatwick and Stansted. Most flights arrive and depart at either end of the day but it was surprising to see how empty the airport was at 3pm on a tuesday afternoon a week before xmas. The airport itself is easy to navigate as there is not much there. Few small cafes and shops and car hire operators. Taxis do not bother hanging around unless a flight is due in and calling one is maybe the better option. Clean and functional and infinitely better than than the evil that is Gatwick South.

Enormous Custard Cream Biscuits

Is there a better biscuit than a Costa enormous Custard Cream? So logical, make a biscuit of the size that one might want a cake to be.

The Penalty for Parking in McDonalds Brentford

Anyone who goes shopping cannot have failed to notice that yellow signs with little writing are appearing, even growing, all over the place in car parks. On close inspection, sometimes with the hubble telescope, it becomes clear that to park for longer than 90-120 minutes seems a crime punishable by death. In fact cameras observe every move of every car but are interested in fact when the cars do not move. In general terms if you park for more than 90-120 minutes you can expect a hefty fine of £100 or more.

This is the case at McDonalds at Brentford, home last week of the excellent Festive burger. Not entirely sure what was festive about the burger, but it was large and had nice sauces and some guilt removing salad inside. While standing outside however I was somewhat astonished to see the bank of cameras covering the small car park. Seemed like I had wandered into Jodrell Bank. I actually have no objection to them doing this, designed to stop football fans parking and cluttering up their car park, but maybe the fines are disproportionately high and the numbers of cameras somewhat excessive. How many might they have in McDonalds North Korea?
