New Volcanic Eruptions in Iceland? August 18th

News is coming out of Iceland that volcanic eruptions may be on their way. Iceland is a great country if a little over-familiar with the giant hot dog and hamburger.  Not the kind of stuff that Iceland Tourism wants to hear about, just when things are getting better, the Icelandic Krona is weaker ( making a cup of coffee less than 5£). The aviation industry have been warned of a “code yellow”. The worry being that an eruption may lead to an ash cloud.

A level of uncertainty has been declared in Bárðarbunga volcano, located in the northwestern Vatnajökull glacier, Southeast Iceland, due to an increase in seismic activity in the volcano.Bárðarbunga is Iceland’s second highest mountain at 2,000 meters (6,562 feet). The largest earthquake , 3.8 in magnitude, occurred near Kistufell last night and apparently continues. In fact near constant earthquakes have been occurring in the volcano for 3 days , as stated on the website of the Iceland Met Office. More than 1,000 earthquakes were recorded in Vatnajökull over the weekend, the majority of which were between 1.0 and 2.0 in magnitude. There is no indication that magma has yet reached the surface.

The Icelandic meteorlogical office issue a map at

http://en.vedur.is/weather/aviation/volcanic-hazards/

On a scale of 1-5 their advice is colour coded and yellow equals a 3/5 risk that background activity is greater than normal but nothing is yet imminent.  Keep watching this space.

Food Photographs Sri Lanka

The food quality in hotels is high. Many foods are offered at all meals including fruit and curry. Some of the best fruits are the pineapples , mangos, watermelon. The bread tends to be of the American type and a little sweet mostly although the basic white and wholemeal loaves contain no additives and taste great. For me the pineaple was the best food, this was available easily and cheaply. The Sri Lankans enjoy their sweet foods too and desserts are essenatially types either of cake with cream in them of various flavours, or mousse like desserts. Sri Lankan coffee is a little of the acquired taste. Can I recommend it? Not really. The tea though is wonderful and like a totally different drink to what we have in UK. There is no need to add milk to tea. Meat is not offered in huge amounts and tends to be used with vegetables in curries rather than served alone. The quality of the meat is also maybe inferior to what is generally served in Uk but is fine. Chicken is rarely served as a breast meat for example, wings, thighs and other less identifiable parts are used. Rice is of many types. Red rice I could not take to but the white rice was excellent. what was the best single food item I ate? Easy. It was the Banana and Coconut Tart!

From the fruits the pineapple and passion fruit were always good. Papaya is not my favourite so unfair to comment. Many of the set meal type lunches were not only huge but often combined meats ( unneccessarily), such as Gammon and Chicken. image

Enormous Custard Cream Biscuits

Is there a better biscuit than a Costa enormous Custard Cream? So logical, make a biscuit of the size that one might want a cake to be.
