Non league Day and Reasons for Regular Nonleague football Chipstead 1 Barking 1 FA Trophy Dogs Come Too

If I were a clever writer I would arrive at some witty headline that encompasses dogs and Barkingfc. Non league day has become a regular date in the calendar when International football means no top level games and crowds are higher.

Although a Brentford fan I manage to catch 10-15 non league games a season and am no stranger to positive reasons to watch non league. Let me summarise the key reasons why far more spectators should visit Chipstead:

  1. Entrance a very fair £9 including a programme. Some clubs such as Carshalton have moved away from paper programmes to e-programmes for obvious reasons.
  2. Free car parking at the ground
  3. Dogs are welcome. Today there were at least 4 dogs there. All on leads and having a good time, with some fields around the ground ( with access) meaning that it was a good thing to let them walk before the game.
  4. Friendly spectators. Folks can and do walk around the whole ground, and of course seats in the small stand are free.
  5. Football quality is good. Some fans who do not frequent non league games may imagine overweight pub teams kicking each other to bits. This analogy is totally wrong. There was high skill level, good organisation, 100% effort all game and some excellent individual skill.
  6. Chipstead play an open and attacking brand of football. They use their wingers  and have a traditional old fashioned centre forward (Alan Tait). In short echelons higher in entertainment than for example the hideous international fare provided by England.
  7. There are players to watch. The player catching the eye today was Leon Lalor-Dell, a skilful pacy left winger, who scored the Chipstead goal, and made what should have been another 3-4 goals.

There is nothing wrong with watching higher class league football, but why not take in the occasional non league game too? And if you fancy finding a tree stump behind the main stand. Especially if your dog needs a day out.

Chipstead 3 Carshalton Athletic 1. Photographs from a cold afternoon

A cold afternoon that ended up little over freezing at the end saw an interesting and entertaining game which either side could have won. Carshalton missed a few good chances and also contrived to miss two penalties rather badly. Good value as always for £9.It is always easy being a football critic of course but the difference between the two sides and maybe the chance of Carshalton reaching the play offs, is taking your chances and taking them at the right time. Carshalton played the better football but the scoreline mandates that Chipstead played the more effective football and certainly looked better than a team that was 20 points below Carshalton.

A reasonably entertaining game but one which the hosts won too easily and the result was never in doubt.

Sometimes when you photograph a game you get lucky. The game is exciting, or there are spectacular goals. Sometimes though you just get a series of quite unintentional photos. Here are a few photos from a Preliminary Round game in the FA Cup 2016 Carshalton Athletic v Farnham Town.

Two things I like about this shot. The sign saying “no ball games allowed” and the photographer here imagining nothing interesting will happen.

Carshalton 0 Leighton Town 2 – Photos

A decent enough game with Carshalton unfortunate to lose this game with an own goal followed by a poor piece of goalkeeping. They then created enough chances to have at least drawn the game but luck was not on their side. Leighton looked the more physical experienced side and maybe that was what Carshalton lacked. They also had a scary goalkeeper , Sam Mazurek and a physical centre forward, Alex Woodbine. There already is an excellent match report from  Chris Blanchard which can be accessed here, so enough about the game.

Nonleague Football Folks. A Photographic Medley

Watching non-league football sometimes allows one to watch some of the other spectators. The football action at Met Police V Bury Town was at times so one sided that one gentleman spent the whole half facing in one direction. Boys being boys behind the goal, eating and climbing and being boy like. Girls all walking together around the ground. Bury Town away fans taking their banner down as their team went 3-1 down in the first half. All good cabaret if the football was not good enough, and actually the football was excellent yesterday.

Woking 2 Wrexham 0

The nearer one gets to the end of the season the more certain matches matter. Woking are safe in the conference and in fact are the most successful part-time club in the UK. Wrexham are a full-time club striving to be back in the football league where they belong. The reality before this game was that their most likely channel would be the playoffs and after this game this is now a certainty. However it is worth just thinking how much football needs to be played by the better sides that are successful in the cup competitions and in fact Wrexham won at Wembley the FA  Trohpy a few weeks ago. They looked tired and most likely were tired having played 48 hours before. Woking were on top for most of the game and always looked the likelier team to score and they duly did twice in the second half in front of 1500 supporters. Jayden Stockley scored both goals and missed a simple chance for his hat-trick. He was the best player on the pitch. The other player to impress, mostly in the first-half was Dele Adebola, who is still a physical handful at this level.

Met Police 1 Carshalton 0

This year has been a good one for Met Police as they sit on the verges of the Ryman Premier play offs. To those not familiar with non-league football, this is 3 promotions below the football league. The ground is a decent small ground near Thames Ditton with a car park and is on the same grounds as the social club for the Met Police. The only problem are small crowds and in fact only 115 arrived for this game and maybe 20 of those were visibly from Carshalton.

The game was as one-sided as a 1-0 game ever could be. Met Police missed a penalty, hit the bar and scored a single goal early in the second half. Realistically this was the last chance saloon for Carshalton who now can look forward to relegation with certainty. The season has been complex for them, with some decent, though apparently highly paid players moving on. One who will certainly move is their keeper Nick Hamann, the best keeper in this league and he kept Carshalton in the game in the first half with a series of superb saves. A conference level keeper in my humble view.
