Kingstonian 2 Wealdstone 0. Photos

A grey day but far from a grey game. A Ryman Premier game played at a fast pace and with no little skill. The game could have gone either way with both these high-flying but inconsistent teams pushing for play-offs at a minimum. My prediction is that they will indeed meet at some stage post-season. Kingstonian, although playing at their ground, in fact groundshare with AFC Wimbledon and as a result the ground is a grand place to play Ryman League football. The floodlights also though far from perfect, are not at all bad for this level. The usual 10£ entry and 2£ for a decent programme, but £4.30 for a burger and kit-kat is a little steep, and in fact was the worst non-league burger I have sampled for some time. Before you ask, the best was Tooting.

A crowd of  451 watched the game, and I would estimate that at least 150 came from Wealdstone. There are far better places to get match reports than here but essentially Weladstone dominated the first-half and should have gone in ahead. The second half Kingstonian played with far better pace and passion and fully deserved their 2-0 victory and even had a player sent off for two yellow cards. Altogether a good day out and in terms of an overall football experience I would score it 7/10 which compares with Tooting last week which struggled to make it 3/10.

Carshalton 0 Canvey Island 2. Ryman Premier

On a damp day 208 souls turned up to watch an entertaining game which until Canvey scored their second goal could have gone any way. Carshalton are currently bottom of the league and the second goal deflated them as did the sending off of one their players for a rash and bad tackle. the first half saw Canvey score in the 3rd minute and by half time Carshalton should have at least equalised , missing 3 relatively easy chances. But a good game with good banter from the crowd. For the remainder of the season? Carshalton will struggle. their defence was not solid and they did not take chances in front of goal, but their effort levels were high and a run of decent results could get them out of trouble. The run needs to start soon. Canvey looked a strong and solid side who will be in the top half of the table. Carshalton also do an excellent burger and Chips. Thanks to Parcelforce however there were no programmes today.

Walton Casuals 0 Leatherhead 2

Not many games to watch today. The fixture list was not kind to me, so it came down to a few to choose from and having not been to Walton Casuals this season, this one was the selected game. Friendly little club, easy parking, only 8£ to get in, nice burger, cup of tea. Altogether a decent experience. Crowd was low, guess less than 100 and half seemed to be from Leatherhead. The game was no-contest really and Leatherhead won despite being down to 10 men for two thirds of the game. They played the better football, were more skilful, had the luck but also had the better keeper. Wlaton might think they were unlucky to have a goal dissallowed for offside but in all honestry this was a one way game. This is going to be a long season for Walton Casuals.

Before today they sat bottom of Ryman South with a negative goal difference  of 15 and it showed. I hope they get out of trouble but frankly at this stage cannot see how.

A few photos from the game including one of the Leatherhead players who decided to pull down his shorts during the game!

Sutton 1 Havant and Waterlooville 1

I do try and be positive about football particularly as it costs good money to get in, in fact this game cost 12£ to get in ( only 2£ for children), 2.50£ for a programme ( not really worth it, full of adverts and little real information or news) and 3£ for a burger. But this really was one of the worst football games that I have seen for some while. Let me try and itemise my grief:

  1. Many/most of the players did  not look fully fit. Some looked considerably unfit and overweight.
  2. The style of both teams was kick and run, followed by kick and dont bother to run. There were significant areas of the pitch that were unused all game
  3. Both goals were of a shabby kind. The own goal scored by Sutton was patently ridiculous. The keeper could and should ( and maybe did) call for the ball, instead the centre half seemingly made a decent finish in his own net. The sutton goal was kind of ridiculous. The ball ricocheted around in the box, hitting random players and the posts and eventually somehow went in.
  4. Neither team tried to play football as I know it

In fact this game was one of the most dire games I have seen for many years. Even at this early stage of the season I can confidently predict that both these teams will be at the wrong end of the table.

On the positive side though, this is a great little ground to watch football in but it does help if you a Sat Nav to help you meander your way to the toilets. They are complex to find. Worth a visit, but maybe on a different day. I will come back later this season and see whats changed.

The tale of an unfortunate EEL that ate a Puffer fish – Photo proof

One of the advantages of having a daughter  in the Cayman Islands diving is that I get to see some amazing photos. This one was taken yesterday on the beach in Grand Cayman and the story goes that this eel was spotted in the sea and  someone dragged it out. It chose a bad meal choice and I have done that before, but this beats even a Brentford burger….her blog is http://www.seniorbushe.wordpress.com

Those clever at this hour will notice the similarity in our blog titles………there is a story. She was called SeniorBushe by friends of her younger brother………..so hence her blog title………..I just added a little bit on as her father…………

Woking 1 Dartford 0

A top of the table clash in blue Square south meant a choice of game today was easy with Brentford not playing till monday night. Decent crowd of 2500 saw a tought game played mostly in drizzle but occasional downpours made conditions less than perfect. Woking is a nice place to watch a game. Entry is 12£, food is decent, certainly echelons above the rubbish served at Brentford. The last time I saw woking was the opening day of this season when they beat Sutton 5-0 at Sutton and it could have been far more, since then Woking have led the table and before todays game were 11 points clear of Dartford.

Woking scored early with a header from Trevor Inns and then mostly hung onto the lead. Dartford had a goal disaalowed for offside and contrived to miss at least 3 easy chances in the second half including missing ( well, hitting the post) when the keeper had been rounded. Both teams were actually good. Dartford played with more effort and were more physical, and maybe Woking had a little more style and skill. There would be no great surprise if Dartford also gained promotion and i would guess neither side would be the worst in the conference. The best player on the pitch was Kevin Betsy, who was making his second ( at least) debut for Woking. Good work rate, skilful. I have never been quite sure why he never made it at higher levels for any length of time and most recently was at Wycombe, maybe he is their loss?

Goal for Woking

Why do Marriott hotels not give Wi-fi free? Selena Gomez

After 2 hours of an unspeakingly dreadful junior Disco, well for me not the children who shrieked their way through 2 hours of songs that bore no relationship to the term that I call music.  A cold walk home. Whatever they say the temperature is it feels like minus 10. Most lower league football has been called off tomorrow so no Brentford and yet another game to re-arrange. All kind of dull really.

So todays rant must be against hotels and in particular the Marriott hotel in Leicester. This place is not cheap. In fact bed and breakfast is 149£/night. The pleasures of wi-fi are only available in the ” bar and restaurant” areas. Otherwise broadband costs 15£/night. This is roughly what virginMedia charge me for a whole month of excellent connection. They then charge 5£ for parking and there is no other option so really the overnight cost becomes £154. There finally is the option to eat in the bar area and a sandwich will cost around 8£ and a burger around 14£. These are disgraceful prices. No room was also available for me when I arrived past the check-in time to compound matters. The hotel is also souless and the staff look like a dose of ECT ar around 4000 volts might be needed. End of rant. But there again, things might get worse and they did. Do not ever be tempted to eat or stop at Newport Pagnell services. They are well beyond awful. Sausages and mash, served to me who eats football ground fare , were appalling, served on a cold plate, the food looked like it might have been cooked this week, possibly. A dreadful waste of 7£. I make all these points and for me the cost is borne by my employer, but I would never spend my own money at either of these two establishmnets again. No camera with me so an old photo to keep you going today. So to finish the evening some music from one of my more unexpected artists, Selena Gomez. Very underated.

Even the heat of a candle is welcome tonight
