Brentford get promotion on an exceedingly Good Friday
Having followed Brentford for 50 years days like this are rare and rarely are they better. Looking at the maths just before lunchtime it became apparent that Bees had a chance of being promoted yesterday if they won and results went their way. Both happened. A tense game but perhaps more easily won than score suggests 1-0, a penalty at that, and Bees also missed another at the Ealing Road end…..
But the outpouring of happiness could only be seen in a small club over achieving and now wondering how much further we might go? We are no smaller a club than Fulham. Indeed in those days when Fulham flirted with relegation from Division 4, their crowds were in the 3-4000 mark and Bees rarely got anywhere as low as that in comparable times.
What has happened? Well Mark Warburton has happened. A manager in his first job taking over a third of the way through the season. Without doubt he improved the play and the players. He signed only a small number of good players instead of dozens of me-too’s. My own view that may not be shared by all is that he is a far superior manager to Uwe. That is a compliment and not a put down to Uwe.
These photos below show the exact moment we thought we had won promotion ( in fact because of that crazy Wolves v Rotherhams game, ending 6-4 eventually, we were a little premature).

Brentford Football Club Need Your Help. Send 1 e-mail!!
Brentford have been my football club since I was 6 years old. I have watched them since then almost every week with a belief that one day they might be a big club. Now almost 50 years on that potential is there. They need a new ground. The old one is atmospheric but small and cannot provide any additional facilities that clubs need. The new proposed ground looks superb and will seat 20,000. Hounslow Borough Council have approved the planning permission and now the government and Mayor need to approve.
Can you write a short email to the 3 folks below giving support for this? The reasons are clear! Thanks. Feel free also to share this blog with anyone who might do this. Another Great Initiative From Brentford Football Club Jan 11th
As a season ticket holder at Brentford we have a great offer for all season ticket holders to be able to purchase up to 4 tickets each for £5 for the home game versus Port Vale on Jan 11th. They must be bought in advance and not available on the day. Yet another piece of good marketing and good common sense from Mark Devlin and the team at Brentford.
January is a fiscally challenging month for most and initiatives like these do really help.
Football Ticket Prices Fall and Potentially Football is Free now in 2014
Going to football games is not a cheap hobby. Let me give you an example. A ticket for an away Brentford fan at Peterborough on New Years day costs £25 if bought in advance and £28 on the day. This is for a standard league 1 game. It is good to see a few initiatives from football clubs to overcome this and potentially help themselves too. Lets not forget that ticket revenue is only one source of income, sales of items from club shops, burgers and programmes also contribute. At a recent home game Brentford in league 1 took around £11,500 in catering income alone, and let me tell you their catering is no Fat Duck. Lets examine a few of the good guys:
- In 2013 Brentford had a ” pay what you want” game. The deal was simply you choose what you pay and anything over 5£ for the ticket was donated to a sports charity. The only thing asked was that the ticket was bought in advance. They also had a similar venture in 2012 however sadly on that day the game was postponed due to adverse weather.
- In 2014 on February 3rd, the game between Hastings v Walton and Hersham in Ryman South , is a ” choose your own admission fee” game. The rationale here is that the game was previously abandoned after 61 minutes and this now has to be replayed. The only costs that Hastings are aiming to recover are the travelling costs for the away club ( fair enough) and the match officials. All other monies will be donated to St Michaels Hospice. A great and sensible initiative . Any locals who do not normally watch Ryman league football should come on down and give it a try, potentially at zero/little cost.

- In 2014 on Jan 4th Basingstoke v Tonbridge Angels in Conference South (Skrill South) is essentially pay what you want minimum £1. On the excellent club website, Sarah Parsons explains“‘This is a gesture to the whole town and outlying districts, we are giving something back to the community by allowing people to come to the match for a price which they decide. We know that January can be tough on family budgets so come to the football match and spend the day with us, and in the clubhouse afterwards. We really want to open our doors for people to come and see us, old fans and new fans, everybody is welcome. Maybe family, friends or workmates of existing fans have always been shy to come along in the past. We have the exciting prospect of a new ground in the pipeline but why not come along and start supporting your local football team now? We know many will still support the likes of Arsenal & Chelsea in the big Premiership matches, that’s fine, but maybe if people came along to see football at this level they may be pleasantly surprised. Ultimately the Town’s football team will be what we as citizens of the Town make it. We have to set a £1 minimum entrence fee due to rules but hopefully people will give us more as every penny helps a small club like ours to grow to become something that the whole Borough can be proud of in future. Tonbridge Angels are a good side in our league and we anticipate a good competitve league match. Our team currently sit in or very close to the league play off positions so it would be great if as many people as possible came through the gates to roar their Town on and hopefully towards victory on the day and ultimately promotion to the Conference National league at the end of this season “This is an initiative that should be supported and encouraged. www.basingstoketown.net/the-club/town-announce-happy-new-year-day/. Lets us hope that more clubs will go down this route. Nonleague football is a great game and often skill and excitement levels are equal to those in some of the lower leagues. The catering is undeniably better than at league clubs!

Lewis Emmanuel ex-Brentford player jailed for armed robbery Skelmanthorpe post office
Not many Bees fans will remember him as he had a loan spell back in 2007 for 2 months. His claim to fame that I just about recall was that he ” got lost” on the M25 and missed an away game at Morecambe. Brentford manager then was the infamous Terry Butcher.
A few more folks will have heard of him today as he has been jailed for 8 years for his part in an armed robbery in Yorkshire. Together with an accomplice they entered the post office masked and ordered customers to lay down on the floor including a 3 year old girl with her mother and grandmother. Essentially held up a post office with a fake firearm. The end of a football career for him. He clearly had good talent at some stage as he played for many decent league 1 and occasional championship teams, but spent most of his career in and out of Luton town.
The story is an unhappy one as reported of a player clearly with talent who went the wrong way. His defence counsel said some of the biggest losers in all this will be his 3 children aged 10, 5 and 4 years.
The Penalty for Parking in McDonalds Brentford
Anyone who goes shopping cannot have failed to notice that yellow signs with little writing are appearing, even growing, all over the place in car parks. On close inspection, sometimes with the hubble telescope, it becomes clear that to park for longer than 90-120 minutes seems a crime punishable by death. In fact cameras observe every move of every car but are interested in fact when the cars do not move. In general terms if you park for more than 90-120 minutes you can expect a hefty fine of £100 or more.
This is the case at McDonalds at Brentford, home last week of the excellent Festive burger. Not entirely sure what was festive about the burger, but it was large and had nice sauces and some guilt removing salad inside. While standing outside however I was somewhat astonished to see the bank of cameras covering the small car park. Seemed like I had wandered into Jodrell Bank. I actually have no objection to them doing this, designed to stop football fans parking and cluttering up their car park, but maybe the fines are disproportionately high and the numbers of cameras somewhat excessive. How many might they have in McDonalds North Korea?
Brentford Football Club Charity Song for Phillipines. Come on You Brentford
Football fans are not usually associated with melodic tunes nor inspirational lyrics. A group of Brentford fans associated with a local group, According To you, have got together to produce a single entitled ” Come on you Brentford”. This is neither a number one nor does it pretend to be. What it is , is a humble tune sold for a humble price 99p in iTunes. All proceeds going to the Phillipines disaster fund. The music collective “Soundhive” also should take a lot of credit. Korea Foods have paid all the production costs.
Perhaps if everyone who read this could share this information ( and my blog if they like), a few souls will indeed purchase this great little tune. I paid up my 99p this morning and the tune is driving my wife mad but quite liked by my children! A decent result.
Why my passion here? Well having been to the Phillipines a number of times and seen the poverty yet resilience of the folks there, they deserve to be helped. On my main photographic web site my front page is a photo taken of the seafront in Manila. This is no average seafront. This is a family living by rescuing empty bottles from the sea and what is eupemistically termed the beach. These are real people. Do they types of folks deserve to lose the little that they have through a natural disaster? I do not think so. 99p. What else does that buy?
