Met Police 4 Bury Town 1. Photos and brief report

Met Police are a club who have always played good football. They now seem embedded in the Ryman Premier and also have a decent ground.  Bury scored first with an unmarked header, but from then on it was one way traffic with some good Met Police goals. Both keepers were busy and have some good moments and also a few ghastly moments. enjoy.

Football Ticket Prices Fall and Potentially Football is Free now in 2014

Going to football games is not a cheap hobby. Let me give you an example. A ticket for an away Brentford fan at Peterborough on New Years day costs £25 if bought in advance and £28 on the day. This is for a standard league 1 game. It is good to see a few initiatives from football clubs to overcome this and potentially help themselves too. Lets not forget that ticket revenue is only one source of income, sales of items from club shops, burgers and programmes also contribute. At a recent home game Brentford in league 1 took around £11,500 in catering income alone, and let me tell you their catering is no Fat Duck.  Lets examine a few of the good guys:

  1. In 2013 Brentford had a ” pay what you want” game. The deal was simply you choose what you pay and anything over 5£ for the ticket was donated to a sports charity. The only thing asked was that the ticket was bought in advance. They also had a similar venture in 2012 however sadly on that day the game was postponed due to adverse weather.
  2. In 2014 on February 3rd, the game between Hastings v Walton and Hersham in Ryman South , is a ” choose your own admission fee” game. The rationale here is that the game was previously abandoned after 61 minutes and this now has to be replayed. The only costs that Hastings are aiming to recover are the travelling costs for the away club ( fair enough) and the match officials. All other monies will be donated to St Michaels Hospice. A great and sensible initiative . Any locals who do not normally watch Ryman league football should come on down and give it a try, potentially at zero/little cost.
  3. As a season ticket holder at Brentford we have a great offer for all season ticket holders to be able to purchase up to 4 tickets each for £5 for the home game versus Port Vale on Jan 11th. They must be bought in advance and not available on the day. Yet another piece of good marketing and good common sense from Mark Devlin and the team at Brentford.January is a fiscally challenging month for most and initiatives like these do really help.
  4. In 2014 on Jan 4th Basingstoke v Tonbridge Angels in Conference South (Skrill South) is essentially pay what you want minimum £1. On the excellent club website, Sarah Parsons explains“‘This is a gesture to the whole town and outlying districts, we are giving something back to the community by allowing people to come to the match for a price which they decide. We know that January can be tough on family budgets so come to the football match and spend the day with us, and in the clubhouse afterwards. We really want to open our doors for people to come and see us, old fans and new fans, everybody is welcome. Maybe family, friends or workmates of existing fans have always been shy to come along in the past. We have the exciting prospect of a new ground in the pipeline but why not come along and start supporting your local football team now? We know many will still support the likes of Arsenal & Chelsea in the big Premiership matches, that’s fine, but maybe if people came along to see football at this level they may be pleasantly surprised. Ultimately the Town’s football team will be what we as citizens of the Town make it. We have to set a £1 minimum entrence fee due to rules but hopefully people will give us more as every penny helps a small club like ours to grow to become something that the whole Borough can be proud of in future. Tonbridge Angels are a good side in our league and we anticipate a good competitve league match. Our team currently sit in or very close to the league play off positions so it would be great if as many people as possible came through the gates to roar their Town on and hopefully towards victory on the day and ultimately promotion to the Conference National league at the end of this season “This is an initiative that should be supported and encouraged.   www.basingstoketown.net/the-club/town-announce-happy-new-year-day/. Lets us hope that more clubs will go down this route. Nonleague football is a great game and often skill and excitement levels are equal to those in some of the lower leagues. The catering is undeniably better than at league clubs!Image-620x350

Walton and Hersham 1 Ramsgate 1

By chance the second time in a few weeks that I have seen  Ramsgate play. A decent enough game played in a low atmosphere ground with a crowd of 100 in attendance. The ground is essentially one sided now with the condemning of the main terrace stand. Walton have had a mixed start to the season under their new manager Steve Baker and on the evidence of yesterday they are a work in progress but going in the right direction. They played good football and generally were entertaining. Ramsgate played a lot more of the physical stuff and a little less of the football, but nevertheless a decent team.  The game got off to a bizarre start as firstly kick off was delayed by 45 minutes due to a major M25 accident. In the second minute Ramsgate had their full-back carried off with what looked like ligament issues. In the fith minute Ramsgate had their number 11 sent off, maybe harshly. Not long after Ramsgate scored and although Walton chased the game it was not until the 80th minute that Walton equalised with a new header from their impressive number 9, Will  Turl. He also had the opportunity to score again in the final minutes with an identical move and header but fell just short.  Interesting aspects of the game? The referee made any number of errors, do not blame him for that, but why not at least consult with the linesman?  The Ramsgate goalkeeper, although competent certainly had eaten some if not all of the pies.  All in all end to end stuff and at this level a highly entertaining game.

The Real Heroes of non-League football. Fans of Woodford Utd

Woodford united ply their trade in the EvoStik Southern, Central division. This is the eighth their of English football. Image Or at least they did this season. Having lost all 42 of their games played they will hopefully be relegated to a milder level of football next season. I took a look at their website. Interesting.  “All new players welcome. Just turn up at a training session”. Is this the reason they have lost all 42 games or as a response. I just wish I had got to see them play. Can they be so bad? Which part of the team is the worst. What does their programme say? What can their manager say? Do they have a manager? Do they invite managers to just turn up? All these questions.

The website tells us that Paul Oddy is both the mnager and the Team Administrator, and guess what there is a link if you want to apply to be a team administrator. The league table tells its own story. A negative goal difference of 164 over 42 games does not bode well. Scoring only 21 goals also does not suggest that the forwards run riot. The forum on the website has one posting from a ” new fan” who lives in Bolton and will try and see a game. On researching a little more they play in a town called Woodford Halse, near Daventry. The ground allegedly has a capacity of 3000 but last weekend their crowd was 42.

It is proving difficult to find out exactly how and why they are so bad. There must be salient reasons? But on a website at

http://www.gumtree.com/p/jobs/woodford-united-football-club-urgently-need-new-players/1004522429

We can start to see why. This is an advert for new players.

Woodford United Football Club play in Woodford Halse, and are members of the Evo Stik Southern League Division 1 Central.

The club is currently bottom of the league with 0 points, and change is urgently needed.

That is why the club is looking out for new players from the Northamptonshire area (and other areas too!) whom would be interested in playing football with us. The club is seeking players mainly in the 16-25 age range, although players aged 25+ will be considered.

All the club asks is that you are fit and able to withstand the challenge of Southern League Standard football, and that you are willing and dedicated to training and playing.

Players in ALL positions are required, and Football CV’s should be addressed to the following:

FAO Mr. Andrew Worrall (Club Chairman)
Woodford United Football Club
Byfield Road
Woodford Halse, near Daventry
NN11 3QR.

You may also contact the club via 01327 263 734.

Strictly no time wasters, many thanks.

Now having read all this, there is an alternative view from ENTS.com ( incidentally a website that I like that brings news of bands and gigs. But maybe their football acumen is not so good? They write this.

Home of Woodford United Football Club, members of the British Gas Business Southern League – Division One Midlands, and one of the most successful and thriving clubs in the region – a club at the very heart of its community.

Woking 2 Wrexham 0

The nearer one gets to the end of the season the more certain matches matter. Woking are safe in the conference and in fact are the most successful part-time club in the UK. Wrexham are a full-time club striving to be back in the football league where they belong. The reality before this game was that their most likely channel would be the playoffs and after this game this is now a certainty. However it is worth just thinking how much football needs to be played by the better sides that are successful in the cup competitions and in fact Wrexham won at Wembley the FA  Trohpy a few weeks ago. They looked tired and most likely were tired having played 48 hours before. Woking were on top for most of the game and always looked the likelier team to score and they duly did twice in the second half in front of 1500 supporters. Jayden Stockley scored both goals and missed a simple chance for his hat-trick. He was the best player on the pitch. The other player to impress, mostly in the first-half was Dele Adebola, who is still a physical handful at this level.

Carshalton 0 Canvey Island 2. Ryman Premier

On a damp day 208 souls turned up to watch an entertaining game which until Canvey scored their second goal could have gone any way. Carshalton are currently bottom of the league and the second goal deflated them as did the sending off of one their players for a rash and bad tackle. the first half saw Canvey score in the 3rd minute and by half time Carshalton should have at least equalised , missing 3 relatively easy chances. But a good game with good banter from the crowd. For the remainder of the season? Carshalton will struggle. their defence was not solid and they did not take chances in front of goal, but their effort levels were high and a run of decent results could get them out of trouble. The run needs to start soon. Canvey looked a strong and solid side who will be in the top half of the table. Carshalton also do an excellent burger and Chips. Thanks to Parcelforce however there were no programmes today.

South Park FC. A football club in the combined counties football league

I had never heard of South Park until 2 weeks ago. they play in the Combined counties League which sits below the Ryman league and I think is hailed as Step 5. Put more simply they need 5 promotions to be in the football league. they have  a small ground on the outskitrs of Reigate. Small floodlights. Small clubhouse. Fenced off pitch surrounded by concrete standing and a small stand that holds maybe 100. A nice compact ground. Friendly too.

A few photos to show you what their existence is like. Some more will be found on my website http://www.footballgroundz.co.uk
