Darkness Descends Over Bolton

No Bees fan will object to 6 points in a week even though the opposition was truthfully dire. For the first time in many weeks or even months, Bees fans came to the game with an expectation of winning. A healthy 3-0 victory a few days previously at Nottingham Forest provided the belief that winning against the bottom side in the Championship would be a likely outcome.

Brentford seem to be praying for victory

The evening was perfect for football and even the River Thames at Brentford looked pleasant enough doused in muddy water. A few strange items, like an old toilet residing beside the water filled with what I hope was old leaves.

New Road

The game was far from a classic but as much as Brentford ever do, they won this game easily at a canter. The Bolton defending was dreadful and frankly a decent Ryman South team might also have beaten them last night. The evening was perfect for football and the result turned out also to be perfect, a 3-1 victory, marred ever so slightly by Alan McCormack giving away a penalty. Brentford played decently enough and a few sparks of what we saw earlier in the season began to emerge. Oddly Nico Yennaris was the man of the match, although Lasse Vibe took the plaudits for his two goals, but Yennaris in central midfield looked comfortable and is learning how to tackle, though was outmuscled a few times . This was an encouraging performance that meant the game was over before half time with Brentford leading 3-0.  It was surprising that as many as 350 Bolton fans made the trip on a tuesday evening to watch their appalling side.

Lets focus on Bolton. They were without doubt the worst side to visit Griffin Park this season and were as awful as Blackpool last season. Their likely trajectory will be similar too as this team looks poor even by League 1 standards, and I could back Colchester bottom in league 1 to beat this current Bolton team. They seemed generally poor footballers, but also dispirited and at times totally disinterested. There were no redeeming features. The defending was non league. Emile Heskey was an unused substitute but his body shape looked more likely to succeed in WWF than in professional football. Time to call it a day. Even he when warming up in front of the cheerful New Road crowd failed to acknowledge the generous applause he got. Darren Pratley committed enough fouls to have got a lifetime ban and seemed slow in pace and thought. A shadow of the former footballer he was.

So two wins in a few days essentially means that we will not get relegated and talk is of aiming for a top ten finish. But we should not get too carried away. Some of our defending was again dire last night. David Button almost gave a goal away by giving the ball away a few yards from goal and Harley Dean made numerous errors that somehow went unpunished. This was however an improved performance with the team looking more balanced than for a long while. Saunders and Woods out wide and Yennaris and McCormack more centrally gave the midfield a formation that seemed to work. Vibe scored two goals and the second one a very neat header. So we are in a lower mid-table position and thats probably right, maybe even slightly flattering. But it is a building block and we are staying up and Brentford fans will have woken up happy this morning.

Who Takes Part in Half Marathons? A Visual story from Reading Half Marathon

The answer is a mixture of normally sane individuals who comprise essentially some professional athletes, serious athletes, those collecting for charity who sometimes run and a group of first time runners. The end result is an eclectic mixture. this is the visual story of some of those who took part in the  Reading 2016 Half-Marathon.

I have some favourites and they include:

  1. The blind runner and his guide
  2. The “not young” runner for cancer research
  3. Those who celebrated coming down the home straight
  4. Those who did it for charity
  5. Those whom I was unsure if they were in fancy dress or not

Carshalton 4 Three Bridges 1 – Absolutely wonderful football game

One normally does not associate Ryman South with wonderful  flowing and skilful football. Those people may be wrong. Essentially to give context this was a middle table game with nothing depending on it between two very different teams. The War Memorial ground is an excellent ground at this level and might easily host Conference South football with a few strategic amendments. The superb 3G pitch looks like a huge success and it was difficult to tell any difference from a grass version.

Some of the best non league terracing Carshalton

Even in the warm up it was clear to the casual observer, one of the 288 present, that the Carshalton team was young and mostly looked 10 years younger than a slightly gnarled older looking  Three Bridges team.

00002449The styles also were a huge contrast with Carshalton favouring a fluid skilful game playing the ball out of defence and using the wings, whilst Three bridges were more physical, forceful and at times presented Carshalton with some rigorous tackles.

Three Bridges also favoured the opportunity to debate regularly with the referee Chris Felton , whether his decisions were correct and give input as to which Carshalton players should be booked and for what reason.

00002445

The game was played in the first half in bright sunshine and by the second half light rain.

The crowd of 288 was a very respectable number considering the league positions and the paucity of away following from Three bridges.

The reality was that Carshalton won this game easily 4-1 and in Ricky Korboa had a winger with unreal talent and balance, who scored a goal worthy of goal of the month at any football level.

This current Carshalton team if kept together will be interesting to watch over the next 12 months.

Altercation At The Finish Line Reading 2016 Half-Marathon

Considering that over 15,000 runners were running and one might guess another 5-10,000 spectators were there too, it would be surprising if the day passed off without any issues. There was a single altercation seen just after the finish line. Casually watching I may have got all my facts wrong but it seemed two male runners were jostling, at first I thought in a friendly manner as they came within 100 yards of the finish line. Certainly one grabbed the other around the waist or maybe upper body as if to pull them back.

Until they crossed the line i thought no more thinking maybe they were friends doing a running equivalent of that useless term “banter”. Having crossed the line though a female runner seemed to be angry with them and strong words were seemingly spoken between her, her male partner/friend and at least one of the male runners. Difficult to know what the issue was but to guess maybe they were pushed/interfered with by these two male runners. The marshals were quickly over to diffuse the situation though words were being spoken still 5 minutes after.

Reading Half-Marathon 2016. Fifteen Photographs To show Why this Is an Important Event

Around 15,000 participants took part in the 2016 Reading Half-Marathon of 13.1 miles. Here are a selection of my favourite participants for many various reasons. Such an event is maybe easy for the professional athlete and there were some who seemed to fulfil that category, however for others, elderly, disabled in some way or simply ” not an athlete”, things are harder and the effort they must make is substantially greater.

  1. For all participants and spectators there is substantial effort to get there on time. Roads are closed. Car parks are full and queueing is mandatory.

For all participants and spectators there is substantial effort in even getting to the event on time

2. The race was open to all-comers, including elderly and physically disabled. They each found their own way to overcome the difficulties associated with a 13 mile run.

3. Thirteen miles is a decent length to run and all participants deservedly recieved a medal for finishing

000024684. The top athletes entertained the spectators and enjoyed the occasional. It was great to see real happiness on the faces of so many runners.Jenny Nesbitt finished as the fastest female on her half marathon debut in 1.12.53.

00002566

5. For the top athletes their finish suggested that they had plenty more energy and some might have seemed as though they would do the course all over again

000025636. Coming down the running straight many finishers accelerated or gave decent celebrations.

00002567

7. Some participants ran in groups and some such as these Breast Cancer supporters finished as a group

000026018. Normal runners also enjoyed their day out

000024619. Not everyone was in trendy running gear. Seems a suit is good enough for some

0000257210. Not everyone ran alone. Some took along some of their family.

00002598.JPG11. A variety of different coloured clothing and running shoes was worn

0000257012. One of the major sponsors of the event was Garmin who sponsored not only the important foil blankets but also the event. Many participants wore Garmin or Fitbit watches or other equivalent.

0000256913. Vitality were the sponsors of the whole event as main sponsor.

0000257114.  In the whole event I only observed one episode of loss of temper due to an event that happened in the finishing straight and may have impeded one runner. The marshals quickly diffused the issue. 0000257315. Every race needs a winner. The winner of the 2016 Reading Half-Marathon.Professional marathon runner Robert Mbitha cruised to victory in 1.02.56

The Cabaret of shopping at Zurich Airport

On a recent short trip to Zurich my two main reflections were that so many people still smoked in Switzerland and how expensive airport shopping is at Zurich Airport.

Lets start with the airport. The shops are fairly good except if you want to buy anything at normal prices. Let me suggest a few items that one could have bought there. A nice side of salmon for £132. A nice bottle of champagne £192. A nice selection of cheese £35. And  I will not begin to tell you about the cost of Mont Blanc watches and pens. My main grouse is not that these were for sale, clearly people can and will afford to buy these, but that there were no normal priced items available. Bottle of wine for a mere £197. If you want Mont Blanc, Lindtt, Porsche, etc and so on, you are fine. Try looking for the Swiss equivalent of Poundland, and goodness that will take a while!

Switzerland reeks not only of cigarette smoke but also money. Nothing looks average and no-one I saw looked poor. The streets were clean and the bars looked nice. But one has to have the money to compete in living there. The streets looked however also relatively empty and certainly no evidence of traffic problems nor traffic jams.

Switzerland Pedestrian Crossing

But normality is seen also in Switzerland with the type of graffiti normally seen in most European countries. Especially on the sides of trains or as here wagons. But a kind of functional graffiti and not in my top ten graffiti images for 2016.
