Clacton On Sea

I cannot recall ever have gone here before other than a brief trip 5 years ago but today this was my work trip. Driving into Clacton it strikes you immediately that this is an old persons town. The WestCliff theatre, that sits nowhere near either the west nor a cliff advertises bands such as Hermans Hermits ( whom I thought actually were all dead), and the average age of the street folks is in the 70’s. But it has a nice feel to it. Perhaps surprising is the number of school age children around on a schoolday. Either in the amusement arcades with parents I should add or on the beach. Why are they not at school? Social workers would have a field day here.  The morning weather was not too bad, sunny and cloudy each in turn but in the afternoon the rain just came down. Lunch was taken in a cafe at the end of the pier, which seemed almost a replica of Bourenemouth pier. Very nice sausage and chips, cheap too. The sea was rough but not terribly so, the beach was kind of inviting.

I came away thinking that I could happily cope with a summer day here on the beach and the pier, the cost of buying a wristband for unlimited rides on the pier a mere £14.  I think i like Clacton On Sea. I would really like to get closer to the windfarms, they fascinate me.

I have called this photo the Black Sea

And why not at school?

Cold day in UK

Even the warmth of a few candles makes things seems a little warmer. What is interesting is the colour sequences that exist in the flame of a single candle. The glass of red wine did help but be warned. The wine is good but anyone buying The Forefather, an argentinian shiraz malbec will find that the corks are appalling.

Darlington Football Club RIP

What has happened at Darlington is tragic. I have always followed Darlington by default as until recently they often sat in the same league as my team Brentford. They had a perfectly good small league 2 ground that held at least 10,000 is my estimate. They then were built a huge ground seating 25,000 just off the A66 sort of in the middle of nowehere, decent stadium for sure, but never needed. Now it seems they will go into liquidation and at best emerge a few leagues below, with or without their huge ground. Tragedy and travesty. The last time I was at Darlington it was a happy day, Brentford won 3-0 to win promotion to league 1 a few years ago. Football needs to look at its soul. So much money goes into the top end that folks forget the real end. even today there are plenty of premiership footballers, not all even in the first-team, whose single salary for 2011-12 season would be enough to save Darlington. although recent crowds have been maybe less than 2,000, the original fan base in their old stadium Feethams, was around 4-5,000. These people deserve a football team and one can only hope that a pheonix club arises from the ashes in the manner that Chester city are also doing.  There is little more to say than this is a really sad day .

For anyone who is interested here are photos of Feethams, Feethams after being disused and the new stadium.  If anyone would like copies of any of these photos then contact me at

Things that should not be grown in December in England

Although not exactly a farmer it is still challenging to grow things in a small garden a few yards from the A3 and in the inclement weather that the UK provides. But I must report some success. Some potatoes harvested today planted a few months back that claimed to be ready for xmas. Daffodils also made an early apprearance, not sure where from but purchased in the Co-op in New Malden for £2.

It was deemed by the head chef and main servant in the household that these were too good to put inot the oven tonight so will be eaten and relished tomorrow with some other more appropriate fare.
