Is B and Q the gateway to hell?

It is sad to admit but on this beautiful sunshine filled day I have wasted an hour of my life walking to and from B and Q in New Malden. Thankfully DIY does not form a major part nor often any part of my life. Today however the annula battle I wage against the flying ants in my garden necesitated such a visitation. Could this be the most miserable place in the world? The inhabitants staff and customers shuffle aimlessly around giving good theatrical interpretations that fall mid way between Shaun of the Dead ( a film essentially about lifeless zombies who cannot ever die) and those queueing at the gates of hell, or worse those doomed with Fulham FC season tickets.

I recall a TV advert for Persil washing powder where housewives were challenged to use this new powder to make their clothes ” whiter than white” ( a curious concept really, how can something be whiter than white? Surely it still remains white? ), my challenge to B and Q could be regarded similarly as impossible. Two separate endpoints. Firstly to make the customers smile,  well at least one, secondly, to make the staff smile. I do not recall where staff walked around with the miserable demenaour of the eternally damned, looking like group bulk ECT might be a feasible option, perhaps an electrical point in the electrical section. All of them without exception did not smile once in my 30 minute visit. The customers looked to a man miserable and fed up. Possibly as nothing could be found anywhere. Possibly because of this hideous systme that is creeping in of ” self payment”. The curious thing is that even though fewer staff are working on the checkouts as customers scan the items themselves ( is this good customer service?), there seems no reductions in prices. Mostly they edged around the store in vain attempts to find anything looking like they were preparing to enter the seventh circle of hell, which in a curious way they probably were. The music playing also was a curious choice to accompany this unbridled misery, “love story” from Taylor Swift.

So come on B and Q do something about it. Or at least dont pretend in your adverts that your staff are so happy and smiling that they border on a psychiatric diagnosis of mania. Or I am going to get more profuse in the use of my new phrase this week ” miserable complaining”.

Murder in Motspur Park in Surrey Feb 9th 2015

Motspur Park is maybe best famous for hosting the Fulham football club training ground and is otherwise part of the london suburbia where denizens leave by train in the morning and return home in crowded rush hour carriages. A murder yesterday Feb 9th has shocked the community.

The basic story seems to go like this. A couple living in a residential road in a terraced house, the husband it is speculated killed the wife. Little more is known other than the man was taken to hospital with alleged head injuries. The road has been filled for two days with police officers,  detectives knocking on doors, numerous journalists. Very little is known about the couple Ray and Linda Mills. They seemed to live a quiet existence and rarely spoke to neighbours but were often seen about. Nothing heralded this event.

Numerous forensic scientists appeared at various times to bring out various bags of stuff that were taken away. Not at all normal for Motspur Park . The body it seems was left in the house overnight for the forensic scientists to complete their examinations, and seems was removed during the afternoon of Feb 10th.

The murder has taken many of the mainstream media such as Evening Standard over 24 hours to reach their attention and other websites too such as

http://www.london24.com/news/crime/woman_found_murdered_in_new_malden_house_1_3950767

An investigation was launched by Homicide and Major Crime Command, led by Detective Chief Inspector Rebecca Reeves.

So at the current time, the 65 year old man has been charged with murder.

Do people in USA ever stop eating? Reflections on USA Part 2.

The volume of food continues to amaze me. For example a lunch order of what I understood to be strips of chicken with salad arrived, and it was actually very nice eaten with great company, but it was covered with about half a pound of crumbled blue cheese. So salad yes, healthy option, to impress my dining companion, became a calorific disaster zone from which I may need medications to elevate my HDL. But it does not stop there, oh no. Pots of strange sauces, the one that was earmarked for me looked like a sort of cocktail sauce. Around a litre……I exaggerate , but not by much. And just when I thought this meal size was looking vaguely normal otherwise…..4 bread rolls in a basket. So a salad turns into something you would go to Weightwatchers for a month to try and recuperate from. This lunch meal I did survive. Then around 4 hours later the executive lounge here ( sounds grand but equals free food and drink in UK and only free food here) serves what they term ” Hors D’oeuvres”. Now here I want to show you how the various dictionaries define ” Hors D’oeuvres”. This is your selection:
1. A small savory dish, typically one served as an appetizer at the beginning of a meal.
2.A small bit of appetizing food, as spicy meat, fish, cheese, or a preparation of chopped or creamed foods, often served on crackers or small pieces of toast, for eating at cocktail parties or other gatherings where drinks are served with no other food.
3.An appetizer, as a relish or more elaborate preparation, served before or as the first course of a meal.

So you get the drift. Something small and tasty. OK. Here in JW Marriott the take a different approach, a generous one. Firstly a hugely enthusiastic lady was exhorting me at 5.20 pm to prepare to eat. Not usual in New Malden. The selection was, and I was informed the expectation of the norm was to have everything. Here goes- sliders ( these are mini-burgers maybe 2 is a normal burger, a USA thing but creeping into UK), mini beef wellingtons, spicy humous, various crackers and chips, salads, cheeses, bread and a few litres of dips and sauces. So it is fair to say this concoction does not represent a ” small bit of appetising food”. For me this is good, no need to have an expensive dinner. For others, maybe most here, this really is a prelude to the feast called dinner. So I really do not think that folks here ever stop eating. I think maybe I need to come and live here but would be regarded as “odd” for not consuming 5000 calories a day. So another nice Day. I certainly have one.

Strawberries, Ducks and Opium. What next?

With a little bit of sun gardens are coming to life. Some plants are already dieing off, Poppies and Chives for example. Strawberries however are making a grand appearance but a badly behaved duck is inclined to spoil the party!

Is this Jose Mourinho or Roman Abramovich Car? Anyone know the numberplate?

Saw this rather nice car parked outside St Pancras Renaissance Hotel today.  Numberplate reads BO55 CFC. So is this boss of Chelsea? Charlton? Curious to know.
