Day 3 of EURO 2016. Meet Sic Kic and Nic Ric. And ITV have been robbed. The Violence continues

  1. Sadly the football violence continues to make the headlines with the behaviour of some Russian fans being little more than psychopathic thugs together with the ridiculously named Marseilles Ultras. The independent evidence from football supporters there ( videos, photos and observations) supports organised groups of black balaclava clothed groups descending on defenceless England football fans. I have zero doubt that there are some troublesome England fans too who are no angels, but evidence supports they are not the root cause. Two fans remain critically ill. The players may also not be as protected as they might wish with Turkish fans throwing bottles at Croatian substitutes warming up. UEFA have said that ” security will be stepped up”. That might not be difficult if fans can bring firecrackers into a stadium. IMG_4390IMG_4396
  2. Turkish football is not a style that appeals to me. Far too much unnecessary fouling and elbows all over the place. Within 5 minutes of the start of the game I had become an avid Croatia fan, although they were no angels either. In fact the physicality has surprised me in all the games to date. Some very strange outfits in the crowdIMG_4391
  3. To be in the Croatian team your name has to end in either IC or A (Badelj being the exception, so he must be good). You can be Sic, Nic,  Kic, Ric, Vic or Tic. FullSizeRender
  4. Why is Glenn Hoddle there? Apparently the mumblings and mutterings of Hoddle on Day 1 would have cost around 25,000£. The unanimous views on Twitter were that Hoddle was great at stating the obvious but little more. ITV have been robbed.
  5. The football so far has been good with the games being competitive to the end and few games are likely to find teams separated by more than a single goal, with some superb goals.
  6. A thought for the photographers there. At the start of the second half of Turkey v Croatia a firecracker was thrown at some photographers. The loud explosion sound was captured loudly on ITV.
  7. What might not be reported? England fans who were attacked in an unproked manner in a bar returned there today to help the owner clear up the mess. That is class. IMG_4389
  8. Best team so far? Germany. My early prediction is that they are the team to beat.

Painting Of Corpus Christi Festival Benalmadena Pueblo By Vincent Van B

Corpus Christi is the Catholic holiday in honour of the presence of the body of Christ in the holy water. It is celebrated throughout Spain and is held in either May or June depending on when Easter occurs. To calculate the next Corpus Christi date, look for the first Thursday after Trinity Sunday (the eighth Sunday after Easter) and you’ll know when the fiesta is set to begin in towns and villages throughout Andalucia.

This is a painting from Benalmadena Pueblo by Vincent Van B from Corpus Christi 2016. Today it is still typical to carpet the streets of towns and villages with greenery for the solemn Corpus Christi processions. This adds a special ambiance to the processions. The Corpus Christi parades also tend to attract all the local authorities, and in some cases, military personnel as well.

What can be seen here is not the petals that adorn the smaller streets but the greenery that is essentially decorative only.

More Waffle Art

This is not the first time I have posted photographs of waffles from Waffle Jacks in Merton, and it will not be the last. But they do make excellent photographic topics. Enjoy

Officer @ Bedford Arms Balham 5th May 2016

A superb set by an interesting  duo. The audience was engaged throughout and happy to share their vocals when asked! A packed sell out Bedford Arms enjoyed this set. A few photographs of DC and Lou that really capture maybe not only the enjoyment of the audience but also of themselves doing the set.

Harrogate By Picture in 20 minutes. A Lot to See

The title sounds a little like a new boy band but having only a short time to see a town there is little option than to choose just a few streets. What is immediately clear is that this a green town, as in trees, flowers and pleasant horticulture.

The architecture mostly is from times long gone and the Royal Baths have turned into Chinese restaurant, tastefully stage managed though, and the old buildings have been nicely preserved and integrated into a more modern city.Even the “authentic asian cuisine ” does indeed look authentic, resembling many of the shops in Colombo, Sri Lanka in its apparent decay, building wise. A nice touch at the Harrogate International Convention Centre, was the “tray” of biscuits. I like this place and would imagine a weekend here would not be a bad thing at all. Even the traffic warden an often maligned creature is getting seemingly a ticket to give herself from the machine!

Spilt Milk Society @229 London

Midlands-based Indie/Rock band who write original music and rehearse in their home studio. The band formed in May 2015 and have since made a name by gigging all over the countries, playing house parties and local festivals as well as featuring on BBC INTRODUCING.

They played a great set @229 Great Portland Street thanks to Absent Kelly who put on an amazing line up of acts. Please enjoy a few photographs of this up and coming band.

The People Of Helsinki

When travelling to other cities and walking around it is a fascinating experience to merely observe the denizens of that city. They do vary city to city. Factors such as age, smoking, fashion and quirkiness all define a city as being different from another. Helsinki is full of polite and very different people certainly from the UK and interestingly other Scandinavian and  Baltic capitals. In short a group of people fascinating to observe. Here are a few examples of the people of Helsinki.

A typical Helsinki couple. Element of distance between them but managing to look cool.

Cigarette and I Phone. A new Oasis song maybe?

Smoking was maybe more common than in other Baltic and Scandinavian countries

Carl Olander @ The Cavendish Arms 23rd April

Carl Olander is a Singer songwriter born in Gothenburg, Sweden. Moved to London 2013 to pursue music.

00003277 His band was created 2014 and is a trio of Carl as the front person on guitar and vocals together with Joel Tavares on vocals and keys and Lucas Vezirian on bass and Niccolo Rebecchi on drums and Marco Casaluce on electric guitar. They have done over 200 shows around London and UK and have done a headline London tour last fall 2015. In 2016 they are doing a number of gigs and were in Italy in Parma on a 7 days tour at the beginning of april.

0000331800003317

They have just released their first video for their single of the upcoming EP called Lions

Lions is a song that hits you straight away as being melodic, interesting and with a novel vocal style. The voice although being unmistakably Swedish at times the intonation is almost reggae like.

There are many new bands out there at the moment but this is one to listen to as they offer something new and different, music with no nonsense. I am never sure to ascribe a style to a band is either helpful or correct, as many bands cross many boundaries, but if had to put them in a genre it would be the curious one of Folk/Indie. But undoubtedly it is an interesting voice singing interesting songs and this band should go far. You can compare singers endlessly but the voice is on a par if not superior to voices like Mumford and sons, and that is no exaggeration.

Carl Olander played The Cavendish Arms and here are some photos from the gig.

Crazy London Weather

The weather in UK has been like spinning a roulette whell the last few days. Arriving back to a snow storm at Heathrow has been followed by sun, wind and rain. A few photographs to try and catch this variable weather.
