Strawberries, Ducks and Opium. What next?

With a little bit of sun gardens are coming to life. Some plants are already dieing off, Poppies and Chives for example. Strawberries however are making a grand appearance but a badly behaved duck is inclined to spoil the party!

Excitement in the Chives

The garden starts to come alive with some sun and water. Poppies do decent impersonations of Triffids. Chives just look great.

Find Gerri Speirs a job. Professional PA

I came across this photograph on twitter and it really spoke to me. a person who is not afraid to go out there and find a job, a person who is creative and a person who is not ashamed to be honest. She deserves to find a job. So maybe we can all forward this on and try and get her the visibility and job she deserves.

LH487 Engine on fire. Where best to land?

One of the more interesting apps is FLIGHTRADAR. Late sunday evening one of the twitter accounts I follow, Flight Emergencies, told us that flight LH487 had squawked 7700 meaning ” emergency”. The plane had taken off from London city airport heading to Basle. The usual reason for most emergencies seems to be those of a medical sort. However on this occasion an engine had caught on fire and the plane landed safely. The Guardian reported this story with a few more perhaps not so important facts the next day.

http://t.co/vkm8HfHHNJ

By chance having followed the flight on FLIGHTRADAR I took a few screenshots of the plane’s routing. As can be seen below, something happened over Gillingham , the plane circled there, then headed in a route suggesting it was returning to London City Airport, then turned north and landed at Stansted. I am no aviation expert but this does not look like a route that the plane would normally have taken if it was landing at Stansted in an emergency situation such as a fire. Surely a more direct route. My guess is that its original destination of London City Airport was altered to Stansted. Some more important information comes from an article written almost a year ago May 2013.  The answer may come from questions raised by Richard Tracey. This is what was reported:

Richard Tracey, London Assembly Member for Merton and Wandsworth, has written to Heathrow authorities to ask why the BA aircraft with its engine ablaze was routed to fly back into Heathrow last week rather than being diverted elsewhere.

Richard’s questions followed worried enquiries from Wandsworth councillors Rosemary Torrington and James Maddan who represent the riversideThamesfield ward on the flightpath.

He wrote, “I represent Wandsworth and Merton GLA constituency comprising around 500,000 people.

“Can I ask why Heathrow/BA decided to bring in a plane in flames right over central London rather than landing it in a country airfield like Farnborough or some such safer location.

“Could you please provide me with an answer promptly.”

He received a prompt response as requested from Abigail Morris, Heathrow’s Government Relations Manager: “The normal procedure in these circumstances if for the Captain to decide what is the safest course of action, and this is what happened in this case. This is an approved procedure.

I appreciate you wanted a quick answer, and I hope this covers that request, but happy to meet and discuss the procedures in more detail alongside our BA colleagues if this would be helpful.”

Richard Tracey has reported back to his Conservative colleagues on Wandsworth Council, but still they feel that, as the blazing aircraft flew over Hertfordshire and Essex before returning to Heathrow over east London and then the densely populated west London boroughs, a decison should have been taken to divert it to one of the less populated areas with an airport

So in the case of LX487 this seems to have happened but seemingly not in a rush. All speculation but a probable explanation.

What also has stoked interest is that this was the second Swiss International Airlines Avro RJ100 to have a serious engine problem taking off from London City Airport. On March 27th a similar sounding engine fire and explosion prevented a plane taking off, LX437 from London City Airport to Geneva

Teenage Cancer Trust and Suede

A few times one feels really privileged to be somewhere and last night at Royal Albert Hall was one such time. Suede playing a concert for Teenage Cancer Trust. The two priviliedges were learning about Teenage Cancer Trust, a trust that does what it says. Looks after teenagers with various forms of cancer and they need this. And hearing Suede do essentially two sets. The first set was Dogmanstar delivered in a a respectful way, followed by a separate concert of the multiplicity of Suede songs. The place rocked and folks enjoyed every note. The best concert I have been to? Almost, Suede in Paradiso last November wins that one. If you have a few minutes go and look at the Teenage Cancer trust website, and learn about what goes on behind the scenes and then imagine if your teenager needed that help, then donate, please.

Great game in the sun and some priceless expressions on the faces too. An amazing goal line clearance, penalty, decent saves, decent headers. Enjoy. And share please!

The Devil in the Marshalsea

I rarely read the saturday review section of The Times. Today for a first for many reasons including an excellent book review of a book due out March 27th by Antonia Hodgson ” The Devil in the Marshalsea”. Amazon was visited and by 9.29 am the book had been ordered. What fascinated me was the topic of the book which is a story around a debtors prison in London in 1727. London then was ( and still is) a cruel place with institutions such as Newgate Jail and Bedlam operating at full capacity to lock those up whom we might treat today with some tolerance or pity even. These places were real then. The cruelty, the fraud, the back room conspiracies and the backhanders. Much of this sounds like what we might read in our papers in the news sections today. Not a lot has changed really.

There are a whole series of books based  on “faction” that cover the history of the middle ages and later, C J  Sansome is an example writing about Matthew Shardlake. Clearly there is an admixture of fact, learning, speculation and fiction, but broadly these books bring to live how life must have been for those in trouble in the 18th century and before.

Lets wait for March 27th and see if my impulsive purchase was a good option or not. I expect it is

Decent game and end to end despite what the score suggests. The pitch was in extremely good condition and judging by the water being pumped out into the car park and hence into the drains, there is a good under pitch drainage system. Shame only 200 turned up to watch.

Brentford Football Club Need Your Help. Send 1 e-mail!!

Brentford have been my football club since I was 6 years old. I have watched them since then almost every week with a belief that one day they might be a big club. Now almost 50 years on that potential is there. They need a new ground. The old one is atmospheric but small and cannot provide any additional facilities that clubs need. The new proposed ground looks superb and will seat 20,000. Hounslow Borough Council have approved the planning permission and now the government and Mayor need to approve.

Can you write a short email to the 3 folks below giving support for this? The reasons are clear! Thanks. Feel free also to share this blog with anyone who might do this. All you have to do is click the link, write the email with your reasons and give your name and address. You will make me happy!!!!

We had a fantastic result on December 5 2013 when Hounslow Council passed a resolution to grant Brentford Football Club planning permission for a new stadium, and residential development, subject to referral to the Greater London Authority (GLA), and the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.

But the game isn’t over yet, we still need your URGENT support to help guide us to victory.

The stadium move can only be secured with your help.

If you want the Club to remain in Brentford and believe the Club and the Community Sports Trust are invaluable assets to the community, then please contact the GLA by next week and declare your support.

The Mayor of London needs to hear your views before he reviews the matter on January 29.

Please email your support to the Mayor Boris Johnson, Deputy Mayor, Sir Eddie Lister and the Strategic Planner, David Blankson-Hemans.

As a reminder, you will find some examples of the benefits of the application below:

Housing: over 900 new homes for London – and, if economic conditions improve, contributions to affordable homes.

Jobs and community benefits: there will be a substantial amount of new jobs created for residents in Hounslow as well as significant community benefits including a larger, purpose built space for the Hounslow Interim Education Centre.

Heritage and views: detailed consultation with Kew Gardens and local residents over past 18 months and over 30 agreed views produced, heights reduced, and our preferred bidder for the role of development partner has provided accurate indicative views rather than a misleading one circulated by some opponents.

Transport: extensive modelling undertaken and Club will committed to working with local groups over coming months to press for further public transport improvements to contributions already being made.

Thank you for your fantastic support over the past few months.

Let’s push on now and secure our Club the home it truly deserves.

For those unable to email or who prefer to send a letter you can write individually to the Mayor Boris Johnson, Sir Edward Lister and David Blankson-Hemans (including the reference no. P/2013/1811) at the addresses below:
