England v South Africa. Day 5. Oval

As most people expected this game was over by tea. But England, well some of them did put up a fight. Ian Bell and Matt Prior worked hard and were somewhat unlucky in getting out. Ravi Bopara looked the average county player he is. But the real story of this game is the great weather, the fact it went 5 days and the superb South African bowling, England were outplayed frankly in almost every regard except Wicket keeper where AB de Villiers looked average to poor.

As a result of making ticket prices 15£, the Oval was decently filled with only the hospitality guests absent as judged by their empty boxes. Dozens of pints were consumed, seemingly by some individuals, and the food prices remain too high for me with the choice poor. A picnic every time for me. But a great day out, a great test match.

Lastly, the stewards. What exactly is their role? Some were gifted lovely luminous jackets with “steward” emblazoned on the back, if we might not have guessed, but others had simeply ” response” on theirs and green jackets. None of them performed any useful purpose other than on occasions blocking visibility. but there again Bopara’s batting or a stewards bottom? The difference is what?

The Victoria Restaurant GastroPub Sheen

Dinner was served for my 55th birthday there. We had heard about the restuarant on Twitter, looked on the website and decided to go for it. This is not a place one will find by chance tucked away in the residential areas of Sheen. A small car park. There is a lot of resemblance to another of my favourite restaurants The Dog and Partridge at Sunninghill. The menu is short but with some great choices. I went for the Sea Trout. All four of us enjoyed our meal a lot. The only negative choice was the Pork Cheek, which despite having a great taste had too much a jelly texture for my son and indeed I tried it but did not like. The general consensus was great place, starters and puddings were best. We drank beer but the wine list looked good. Next time we return we will do the two course menu. Recommended!

30th Birthday Party

The weekend was a fine time. My eldest had her 30th birthday party which went all excellently. Bellini’s in southampton were fantastic hosts and the music/cabaret from Lucinda Lashes, who I think is resident there, was great fun. Cannot recommend the place more highly and apparently the restaurant food is also reckoned to be superb. The story of the evening is best told in photographs. Although I am sorely tempted I have not put captions to any of them! The bar over the road in Oxford street served nice bitter, Doom it was called. Go and try that. Sunday was spent recovering and then 3 hours of shopping at gunwharf Quays in Portsmouth. A sort of outlet centre. Some bargains to be had but not in all shops. burger King was my treat that day!
