Slovenia- A Beautiful Country

There is little doubt that Slovenia and the capital Ljubljana are two of the more beautiful places to visit. A few photographs from a recent visit just to demonstrate a little of this country. Even the graffitti is beautiful and stylish!

I was the rush hour. A transport story involving a Rheumatology Congress in Glasgow at SECC, Southampton football club and the rush hour.

One of the more unusual presentations at this years BSR congress ( the annual rheumatology congress in UK, usually devoted mainly to illnesses such as Rheumatoid Arthritis etc), was a nice presentation from Phillip Cooper describing the epidemiology of sporting injuries amongst elite football players. This was a study conducted at Southampton football club from 2007-2010 and included all 272 players. As expected most injuries were muscular or ligamentous, but of interest was the time that they happened.  There was a trend to slightly increased frequency in the latter parts of each 45 minute half and in the last quarter of a training session in the first-team players. My question to the presenter related to whether injuries were worse in any one division as Southampton have been up and down the leagues over that period. A great talk and a real surprise to find this on the agenda.

SECC Glasgow . A good view while walking there

The SECC is an impressive multi-purpose venue in Glasgow for concerts, congresses and various meetings. The architecture also is impressive. Originally opening in 1985 it has been expanded over the years and is 95% owned by Glasgow City Council. The Clyde Auditorium was built in 1997 and looking rather like an Armadillo, is thus often called that! The site occupies 64 acres, mostly parking for 1600 cars and has its own train station nearby, although with a formidable walk still through one of the most interesting tunnels I have experienced.

Rapeseed Fields

Not everyone has heard of rapeseed despite its unfortunate name.Rapeseed oil was produced in the 19th century as a source of a lubricant for steam engines.Rapeseed is grown for the production of animal feed, vegetable oil for human consumption, and biodiesel .According to the United States Department of Agriculture, rapeseed was the third-leading source of vegetable oil in the world in 2000 with Canada and China being the top producers.

Rapeseed pollen contains known allergens. Whether rape pollen causes hay fever has not been well established, because rape is an insect-pollinated (entomophilous) crop, whereas hay fever is usually caused by wind-pollinated plants. The inhalation of oilseed rape dust may cause asthma in agricultural workers.

In the UK around May the fields do look stunning in their bright yellow colours. These fields are just outside Middlesbrough

Food Photographs

Sometimes something as simple as a meal or a drink is worth photographing. Kiwi fruit always looks good.

Cowpie Country Show 2015

Cowpie sounds like a strange menu item but in fact is the annual show for the Surrey Young Farmers. Up until this year it had been held at Betchworth near Dorking, but maybe because last years event had to be postponed due to rain , it was moved to near Lingfield.

The Cowpie Country Show is organised entirely by Young Farmers and volunteers and is held annually in May. The Show attracts around 20,000 visitors who come to see the wide range of main ring attractions, livestock, side shows and trade stands.

Cowpie also incorporates one of Surrey YFC’s main competition days, so visitors can see Young Farmers competing in events around the show ground, like hay bail racing, livestock judging, charity racing and archery.

The show is a great day out with a mixture of events, like various dog racing and dog competitions, birds of prey ( a little sanitised if I am honest), stalls, a small fair and various other diverse events that include tarot card reading ( maybe something for Nick Clegg next time?), motorcycle stunt riders, sheep shearers and many more things.

Clarion Hotel Arlanda Airport

Although I am not generally a fan of airport hotels, this one at Arlanda Stockholm is the exception. Really nice rooms, really nice breakfast and nice bar areas too. And you reach it from the concourse somewhere between terminals 4 and 5IMG_8354 IMG_8359 IMG_8361 IMG_8362
