Reflections on Away Day at Reading FC Madejski Stadium

Away fans have a few minimum expectations when travelling. Mostly that they will get there, be able to park and be able to find the ground. Reading football club make a great effort to ensure that these are met.

Their website gives good parking information and in fact on the presumption that unless one arrives at 2 am that the official car parks will be full, the two big car parks around the ground on a derelict piece of wasteland and on the greyhound stadium site together hold 1500 car parking spaces for 7£ each. Each well signposted from the motorway. The expected downside was an approximate 45 minute wait to escape after the final whistle.

The ground is situated just off Junction 11 of M4 and is surrounded by food outlets including KFC where I had the worst chips ever, and that includes school food. But in terms of availability there is a decent selection of fast food. The stewards were just normal stewards, if that term applies. The ground is maybe 10 minutes walk from the Reading Gate food outlets and shops.

The ground gives great views. There is not a bad view in the ground including from the penultimate row JJ in the away end. Maybe the only surprise was that the front seats in the lower tier of the away end were not available for use. Not everyone wants to sit perched in the sky.

Altogether a good away day for an away fan.

Brentford Bees Forum With Manager and Sporting Directors

An excellent forum was held where all questions were answered as best as reasonably they could. The only difficult moment was a late question again about Mark Warburton and his departure. The fans were given good updates on all aspects of the club. These were maybe the main points:

  1. Promotion to Premier League within 3 years. This is Plan A. There is no Plan B
  2. The new ground should be ready, just, for start of 2018-19 season
  3. Signing a couple of players on loan has not been ruled out to cover injuries
  4. We need to remember than until we move ground we are limited by the small turnover in comparison to other Championship clubs. Last season Brentford turned over 8 m £ in comparison to a Championship average of 17m £
  5. Although signing many EU players, players in the Football League are on our radar even down to Conference level
  6. Football league rules do not allow differential pricing of games for away fans. The example cited of Leeds charging £24 for a junior away ticket for example could not replicated at Griffin Park
  7. The squad is stronger than last season.

In attendance answering questions were

  1. Mark Devlin
  2. Cliff Crown
  3. Marinus Dijkhuizen
  4. Rasmus Ankersen
  5. Phil Giles
  6. Peter Gilham

As a small bit of background Rasmus ankersen and Phil Giles are the co-directors of football at Brentford, Cliff Crown the chairman, Mark Devlin CEO and Marinus Dijkhuizen the manager.

  • Phil Giles  worked at Smartodds – a company owned by Matthew Benham which provides statistical sports modelling services – for eight years and had been their Head of Quantitative Sports Research since 2010
  • Rasmus Ankersen was Chairman of FC Midtjylland the Danish Superliga team owned by Matthew Benham and author of a book ” The Goldmine Effect”.

Brentford Fans Forum. A photographic record

Enough has been said about the excellent forum and the transparency with which questions were answered. There was also restraint shown by the fans in not asking any negative or difficult questions that also may have been on their mind. Please enjoy a few basic photos all sadly I Phone standard but nonetheless may give a view to those who were not there of what it was like.

The atmosphere was great, supportive and at times amusing, with the witty Peter Gilham in charge as always. Cliff Crown looking every inch a Premiership chairman. Honest and meaningful answers. David Weir looking like and sounding like a football coach. Great evening.

Sylvan Augustus Ebanks-Blake

Sylvain Ebanks-Blake played 85 minutes for Brentford in their development fixture versus Huddersfield last saturday. First impressions were positive, a strong forward who used pace and strength to get in the box. He scored one goal and might have had others. Currently on trial with Bees. Looking through his playing history he has been successful scoring 25, 15 and 12 goals a season on 3 of the 5 seasons he spent with wolves 2008-2013 including in the Premiership. In 2013-14 he was an Ipswich player and made 10 appearances without scoring and is currently a free agent. Impressions are that if fit he could be a decent striker. Looking at the injuries he had they have been serious. Knee ligament damage and fractured fibula amongst others.

According to Wikipaedia he has had a few problems in his personal life.

In 2008 Ebanks-Blake was charged with causing actual bodily harm to a doorman in an incident at a Plymouth nightclub on 11 November 2007 while a Plymouth Argyle player. He was subsequently fined £1,350 with £650 costs and £500 compensation by Plymouth Crown Court on 4 July 2008, after admitting to having attacked the doorman with his girlfriend’s handbag causing a three-inch cut to his head.In March 2013 he was arrested and questioned by police in Birmingham on suspicion of witness intimidation but released without charge.

Will be interesting to see what Warburton makes of him. The question is his fitness and maybe a pay if you play approach might be better. His age is in favour being only 28 years age

Cobham FC Ground

Cobham FC play in the Combined Counties league and it seems Mole Valley SVR also of the CCL play their games there. A real little gem of a ground. Proper non league football. One main  stand and a fence around the pitch perimeter. Long grass surrounds the whole area. Small metallic structure behind a goal that could constitute the away end. Blue lines mark out the pitch, which I kind of liked and a banner from 2010 decorated part of the fence. This is a home of real football.

Brentford Fans of Real Football! Conga and Pitch Invasion at Milton Keynes

Brentford fans have had plenty to grumble about over the last decade but the last few years have seen the club spiralling upwards at a frenetic pace. Crowds this season have almost doubled and the supportive atmosphere is almost palpable. Promotion to the Championship was finalised on a very Good Friday and the away game at Milton Keynes was at best a celebratory exercise. Somewhere in the region of 3,500 Bees fans made the trip and from visual inspection that seemed to make up at least 50% of the crowd. The crowd was given as over 10,000 though.

The game was almost irrelevant as the fans sang and played their way through the game. A conga down the aisle, a happy small pitch invasion at the end and a few amusing songs about the joys awaiting MK Dons next season with visits to Fleetwood!

Brentford Football Club Favour Needed

I need a favour from as many friends on here as possible. As many of you know I have been watching Brentford Football Club for 50 years. It is time for them to move to a new stadium. A stadium site has been identified a few yards from the current ground, and frankly is an excellent option. The council are considering the planning application on Dec 5th and we need as many folks to be supportive of this as possible. My own view is that this is an excellent opportunity to improve the local economy, provide free education as well and generally to progress the football club. You can read full details on the Brentford FC Website or on  www.brentfordcommunitystadium.com.What i need is this. Please email Shane Baker at Planning@hounslow.gov.uk with your views and please include your postal address and name. It really will help.
