Grenfell Tower. A blog predicted a fire would happen in November 2016

It is horrifying what has happened in Grenfell Tower. Words cannot explain how it must have felt to be part of this fire, observed the fire or even reported on the fire.

Even seasoned news reporters looked on the edge of tears as did Jeremy Corbyn. Everyone from Muslim Aid through to QPR football club have gone out and delivered practical help. People have booked and paid for rooms in hotels.

What however is more frightening, upsetting and anger provoking is to know that last November a blog posted a despairing article on the management at Grenfell Tower. They report that a fire such as began at 1am today which may or may not have anything to do with an exploding refrigerator on the fourth floor, was going to happen. Just please read this blog and form your own opinions.

Reflections On An Away Day At Queens Park Rangers

For fans not so familiar with London, Queens Park Rangers play at Loftus Road in West London, which is about 1.5 miles from Hammersmith and near to Shepherds Bush. The area is a curious area  and on the good side with many “expensive” cafes thats serve excellent food and a plethora of oddly named hotels. Take the New Century Inn. Not entirely clear which century it was new in but a good guess might be the 19th century and not much has changed since then. There also seems to be a desire to dig up every piece of ground nearby and the building works and roadworks are numerous.

The cafes are good though and it may be better to feed in one of these than chance the dubious food on offer in the ground at also very extortionate prices.

A strong recommendation is to travel by underground as there are many underground stations in the vicinity , Wood Lane, White City, Shepherds Bush Market and Goldhawk road. Parking will be 7 kinds of nightmare and I do not recall seeing anywhere to park like a reasonable car park at all.

As with all ex-premiership clubs, habits die hard and there is overkill with hundreds of stewards and police horses. The local fans however seemed in general terms pleasant enough. A number of barricades are in place mostly to stop cars but expect a little interest from the stewards at any barrier for any reason. IMG_2324IMG_2326IMG_2327

IMG_2329Expect to be searched going into the away end and expect confusion as the entry for the Upper Tier stand behind the goal for away fans is on the opposite side of the ground for  that of the Lower Tier Stand. The searches are friendly enough but on the excessive side.

The walk from the nearest tube stations takes maybe 10 minutes maximum. Almost all the local pubs are home supporters only, so anyone in search of alcohol may need to head a little way away from the ground. If you have time to visit the dentist then the curiously named Batman Dental Surgery is an option opposite the ground. IMG_2325

The away fans are given the stand behind one goal and if you are in the front few rows as I was you are hardly 5 yards away from being on top of the goal. A very tight ground, that generates a good atmosphere.

Having said all that the views are excellent for the away fans. However another remnant of premiership football is the high cost of tickets, £32 for mine and the £3.50 programme.

IMG_2335A few curious signs and pieces of information emerge on the walls of the away end. Not entirely sure what they add to the spectacle but interesting anyway.

IMG_2334This is a good day out for away fans and a trip to be encouraged but it would be good if the club realised that most fans do not create trouble and an excessive degree of policing and stewarding is a negative and expensive and unnecessary phenomenon.

Ricky Sappleton is a Jamaican born forward playing in 2015-16 for Kingstonian. having joined last summer from Billericay. Having started of with QPR he made one first team appearance for Leicester City before moving to non league . A giant of a forward with strength as a clear attribute he is not slow either and a few action shots from the Met Police 2 Kingstonian game show this nicely.

A visit to Molesey FC and why all football fans should visit non league games

A humble first round FA Trophy game Molesey v Didcot Town. A spare saturday arose as Brentford had defeated QPR on friday night, the first win over their neighbours from 4 miles away in 50 years. What made me choose this game?

  1. Parking is easy
  2. Cheeseburgers are good
  3. Molesey play an attractive type of football fast paced
  4. Only 8£ entrance
  5. A cup game that may have something riding on it on the day

Considering the crowd was 95 and lets assume all adults, which clearly it was not, the maximal gate takings would be £760. So the prize money from the FA becomes quite important. A tiny bit of research tells me that the winner yesterday, Molesey, gets £2700. Roughly equivalent to the gate takings from 4-5 routine games.

FA Trophy Season 2015-16 Payments made from The FA’s Prize Fund
Preliminary Round winners (64) £2,500
First Round Qualifying winners (72) £2,700
Second Round Qualifying winner (36) £3,250
Third Round Qualifying winners (40) £4,000
First Round Proper winners (32) £5,000

The cheeseburger was good as was the chips, a total of £5 and little need to eat anything else that day.

The game was a feisty game played generally in good spirit. The referee might have allowed a bit of laxity before sending off Rob Sheridan for two fairly benign yellow cards. He also might have wanted to update himself on the FA rules regarding sent off players. The player watched the remainder of the game from the touchline behind a barrier essentially with me, though might have discarded his shirt …..

Having checked the rules. This is what it says “A player, substitute or substituted player who has been sent off must leave the vicinity of the field of play and the technical area.

So I guess it depends on the interpretation of what constitutes the vicinity of play. The game ended Molesey 1 Didcot Town 0.

A visit to non league does restore faith in what football can and should be like. Yes, there is swearing and fouling, but generally less of the antics that have become embedded in league players. A player on the ground does mean he is hurt.

I did however have a little smile at the programme and clearly Didcot were keeping their team a secret. Not sure I have ever seen a programme actually that did not list at least a guess at the various team members.

Flooding near Esher

Even now that the rain has allegedly stopped, the flooding is still present in many areas in Surrey. Certainly in Cobham the Thames is very high still and these photos are of a nice filed that is often used for picnics and cricket, not at the same time, in the summer. Near Esher and in fact opposite Garson’s Farm in Winterdown Lane. The cruel ones amongst us might suggest we are looking at the new QPR football ground with ample space for their legions of fans watching a team that has been the most consistent in the football league this season!
