RIP Hedgepig the Hedgehog

Hedgepig lived in and arguably dominated my study for the last year. He rarely bothered to get up and communicate with me in the day but at night would spin round on a massive hamster wheel and make other peculiar noises. He ate crunchy cat food and mealworms whenever these were available. To be honest not an awfully cuddly type of pet as he reversed whenever picked up. He used to huff angrily at anyone invading his territory a large cage but eventually called a truce and rarely bothered to spike anyone. Most of his life he lived in a red slipper and today he was buried in the garden in his red slipper. He was a tame hedgehog not one “caught:.  I think he is an African Pygmy hedehog? He was given to us for safekeeping about 18 months ago when his owner went over to Mexico. We will miss him, a more photogenic hedhog there will never be.

The Animals of New Malden

New Malden is becoming more like a zoo each day with the various animals living here or thinking that they do. In an average day we would see a fox or two in the garden seeking sustenance from the waste bins , far too many evil minded squirrels , various cats, and now we are blessed with a hedgehog and a hamster. The Hedgehog was initially on a sort of holiday visit, but is now a permanent fixture. The Hamster, called Houdini, as he always manages to escape, must be almost 2 years old. Enjoy, meeting these charasmatic animals.

Hedgehog emerges

Slovenia

a busy week. Got back from slovenia saturday afternoon and was straight off to take Elena to her birthday party. A trip to see Johnny English at the cinema with 3 friends, a curry afterwards and then the dreaded sleepover! they went to sleep 1.30 am and was up 7 am………needless to say they are tired today. Photographs will follow in due course. Hedgepig decided to be extra social today and came out happily in the daytime sitting on folks laps. The film was actually very funny. Rowan Atkinson doing a sort of tuned down Mr Bean character. Greyhounds all walked today with Elena accompanied by her current best friend Caitlin, who could not be more different to Elena if she tried.
Happily, I missed a 0-0 Brentford v Scunthorpe game which sounds as exciting as the scorelines suggests.
slovenia though was amazing. A special place. Green country with snowy mountains, happy smiling people and lovely city centre with river walks, cafes, bars, music everywhere. I was however the oldest person there! My talks went well so a good choice that I will be invited back to slovenia and Croatia!
Weather here is starting to turn autumnal, leaves are all off the trees, cold in the evening and heating has been turned on for the first time. Not bad I suppose, the middle of October!

Hedgepig

due to public demand and thousands of plaintive requests, I have given in and taken some photos of the beetle-crunching Hedgepig. Strangely he agreed to come out in the daytime and have his photo taken. His price was a plate of mealworms and beetles. Apparently the mealworms turn into beetles?

Sporting sort of weekend

all remains well here and summer has even returned again. Saturday was football day but it seemed too far to go to Sheff Utd v Bees, so went to watch Sutton v Woking instead. A good choice. Bees lost 2-0 and it sounds worryingly that they were outbattled. Sutton 0-5 woking, meant it was a really good game to watch if a little one sided. Photos will be in next post.
Today sunday, went to watch a one day cricket game at Horsham, Sussex v Worcestershire. A 40 over game. Went with Matt,Ray and Marian. Was a great day out. Weather was perfect and game was exciting.
Tomorrow Elena is starting her week at West End Stage in london and will be performing again at Her Majesty’s theatre next sunday evening. All very exciting. What will not be exciting is travelling, commuting, daily to London,Barbican area, to arrive before 10 am. So joyfully we will be on the 7.50 am train to Waterloo tomorrow in only a few hours time.
Other news is that I am sort of starting to get the hang of this new IMAC computer and have transferred over all the data from the previous computer. The challenge is finding out exactly what the computer is capable of doing.
We are off to Spain on 22nd Aug till 1st Sept and Charles is coming out to spend a week out there. No new Pet news, all seems stable! Hedgepig ate some apple last night and is generally becoming more friendly. Cannot recall when we last had a chuff or prickle alert.
Hope all well in Mexico land. You will need to explain your plans to me as I will be in USA a few times in the next 12 months and hopefully can get to see you and this lovely sounding place.

Riots

The news here falls into two headings both equally depressing. The value of shares is plummeting for reasons that I dont understand. And there are riots breaking out all over UK. Mainly London area, like Brixton, Lewisham, Hackney and tottenham. Tonight Lavender hill in Clapham is being looted. Birmingham also. Reasons? Again no idea other than mindless psychopathic violence.
My contribution to Twitterland today was to inform that if you drive down the M3 and A33 to southampton, on the outskirts there is a Total garage, very exciting, but it does hot southern fried chicken burgers! And they do these with a bottle of Pepsi for 3£……….so in these times of financial paucity this is a fact to be relished.
My next book chapter on Prolactin is due out soon, not exactly JK Rowling, but better than nothing.
Hedgepig is fine and has stopped that silly chuffing and reverses far less. He lets us handle him and even feed him those lovely mealworms. Houdini now lives in his cage on top of Hedgepig. Like a high rise Animal apartment block.
Charles has had grief with his car. The clutch cable went on friday and we persuaded Gary to go over to Paley Street to fix it today. All done. One happy Charles……….
Elena has discovered the David Lloyd Gym. They have a kids exercise session and she came back muttering mutterances about cross-trainers, whatever they are……….but likes it. Bizarre.
Cannot wait to go to Spain in two weeks and our challenge is finding Hedgepig sitters while we are away, he may have to have a temporary holiday back at Paley street if thats permitted. And the lost tortoise has been found uneaten!

Saturdays are back to normal

Football has returned. Went to a Brentford friendly today away at Aldershot. Crowd not bad for a friendly about 1300 with 250 Bees fans there. I like Aldershot as they dont try and stop me taking my photographs. Brentford look like a decent team this season, and in fact the existing players, O’connor, Bean etc are the ones that look poor. We have a loanee from Celtic with thousands of followers on Twitter, we are assessing some French player from FC Lens, we have a great centre back from some German side……… and so on. Bees won the game 2-1. Maybe the most one sided game I have ever seen. Have posted a few photos to keep you amused but try looking at the penalty photo with Richard Lee going the wrong way!
Other than that weather lovely here in UK, back to T shirts. Hedgepig is starting to be more friendly, houdini is on form, but some horrid animal in the night knocked down and broke a Sunflower I have been growing. It has been a good year though for Sunflowers and we have 3 heads harvested with seeds already……..so have planted another.
Elena was delighted as our potatoes have grown, not many ( and have cost a fortune, could have bought about 40kg from Co-Op for what our little tubers cost.
I did realise something sad today though…….. the NHS will try and pay me my pension in less than 2 more years……must be getting old. But looking forward to eating the food harvested from the garden tomorrow, when Charles comes over. Potatoes,Strawberries and Rocket…..
On the down isde, the young foxes are causing havoc, stealing all sorts of things in the garden like trowels etc and so noisy.

Hedgepig is not being kind

Despite a full cage clean last weekend, deodarant and the lot- it needed it…………he still makes every attempt to both prickle me and huf and puff. We gave him the last of his mealworms today with one beetle tucked away as his snack. He also has a new home, a new, well old, blue slipper well past its use by date……..
