Brentford 1 Huddersfield 2 Under-18

Despite threats of rain the sun came out and gave decent conditions for this saturday lunchtime game. The reality was that this was an easy win for a Huddersfield team that showed more physical strength than Brentford but all 3 goals were scrappy, with some doubt over the second Huddersfield goal which looked offside.

For those not familiar with this standard of football it is mostly played in decent spirit however Huddersfield did resort to timewasting from their goalkeeper as early as the 60th minute and a few cynical tackles from both sides. The last 10 minutes was frantic after Brentford scored a scrappy goal and four yellow card in four minutes summed up the frenetic nature of this last 10 minutes.

The standard of football is good with a lot of skill but it seems that physical strength plays a large part at this level in terms of results when the average age of the side is low. One player stood out on the pitch, the Huddersfield number 7, Jack Boyle. He displayed stamina, strength, skill and and effort. He is the player to watch here.

A Day in Wimbledon

Just a day out really but things that catch your attention.

  1. Empty trains at midday. Why cannot train companies like Southwest Trains look at operating far more a supply and demand service? It is crazy to have completely empty carriages.
  2. The weather in UK can vary from blazing sunshine to rain in only a few minutes. I Phone weather forecasts sadly are the worst source of information. Just open your eyes and look.
  3. How nice to take time and relax and sit peacefully and drink a coffee watching the world go by. No computer and no work
  4. Very little evidence of adult adhd

A 45 Second Rant against Slow people in airports.

Written by the 14 year old and made me laugh.

One of the things that really annoys me is when people walk very, very slowly in front of you. Sometimes these people realize that there is in fact, somebody behind them and obligingly let you go past but most of the time they remain completely unaware, even if you do politely ask them if you could “just get through.” Apparently, this category of people tends to be both ignorant of your polite pleas and also surprisingly very slow indeed. As well as this, these people often seem to appear right when you are in a hurry, in airports for example. You have just gone through the whole rigmarole of trying to find your boarding cards, had your bag checked by security because there was some dangerous hand cream that was over 100mls and not in the plastic bag provided, and finally you settle down on the hard plastic seats before you realize that the departure screen for your flight is reading LAST CALL and you rush off to your gate which is not where the signposts state it is, and just as you are hurrying through those corridors, you are stopped by the people in front as they are walking as slow as is humanly possible. Possibly even slower than that in fact. Unfortunately for the fast walker type of people, the slower people not only can always be located directly in front of you, but also have the tendency to walk in large clumps of slow walking people. The only way out of this situation is to push through and apologize profusely, and hope that no other person has the misfortune to be stuck behind these people at any time that day.

Rapeseed Fields

Not everyone has heard of rapeseed despite its unfortunate name.Rapeseed oil was produced in the 19th century as a source of a lubricant for steam engines.Rapeseed is grown for the production of animal feed, vegetable oil for human consumption, and biodiesel .According to the United States Department of Agriculture, rapeseed was the third-leading source of vegetable oil in the world in 2000 with Canada and China being the top producers.

Rapeseed pollen contains known allergens. Whether rape pollen causes hay fever has not been well established, because rape is an insect-pollinated (entomophilous) crop, whereas hay fever is usually caused by wind-pollinated plants. The inhalation of oilseed rape dust may cause asthma in agricultural workers.

In the UK around May the fields do look stunning in their bright yellow colours. These fields are just outside Middlesbrough

A good reason not to always travel by boat to Brentford to watch Brentford FC. Thinking of Chelsea…

Brentford 3 Wigan 0. Brentford in the Playoffs for Premiership

Almost unbelievable. A slightly subdued Griffin Park watched as miracles happened with Brentford easily marching past Wigan 3-0 and alos missing the obligatory penalty on the way. But a good Bees performance, although they might have scored many more was enough to get them in the playoffs, with Derby losing surpringly at home to Reading 0-3 and Ipswich losing at Blackburn 3-2. So three sides end up on 78 points and only Wolves with the worst goal difference lose out.

A few photos from a semi-pitch invasion that ceased when the crowd were told that the players would not be coming out that friday the pitch was needed for in good condition and they all dispersed in good mood.

Slovenia and Food

Many aspects of Slovenian food are not unlike good quality British or American food.In 2006, the leading Slovenian ethnologists have divided the country into 23 gastronomic regions. Breakfasts tend to be a mixture of fresh fruit, cold meats and cooked eggs. The quality is exceptionally high. The first Slovene-language cookbook was published by Valentin Vodnik in 1799 and I am not planning the second. A few more curious ingredients it seems also, such as Dandelion being popular in salads, and soups it seems are quite a new invention in Slovenia although they now have around 150, enough for most.

There are however a few more unique aspects to their food. For example a very thin crispy pizza served as a starter, with toppings in different lines of pizza being different. Works well as a starter but a temptation to eat rather more than one might want to. Many countries seem to bring their own cultures and influences. The provision of an extra course of cold meats and cheese after a starter with ample bread also suggests not a UK tradition!photo 1-9

There are however some strange traditions here, like giving cups of coffee seemingly only half full even when one asks for a traditional large Americano!photo 4-5 photo 4-8photo 4-3photo 5As Slovenia borders Italy and is not actually a million miles from Venice, there are some Italian influences in addition to pizza and ice cream. Roasted potatoes are simple and ample portions. Pork cordon bleu is almost German in its origin.

Desserts can also be interesting with Tarte Tatin hot with ice cream. Prices are maybe 30-50% below what current UK prices are. photo 5-8 photo 5-9 photo 5-10 photo 5 photo 2-1

Jack O’Connell signs for Brentford FC from Blackburn

Seems that Sky reckon the Bees have paid around £200,000 for the 20 year old 6ft 3ins 85 kg defender  from Blackburn Rovers. He has had two loan spells with League One side Rochdale this season, making 20 appearances and scoring three goals. His only appearance for Blackburn was the Capital One cup defeat by Scunthorpe in August. Other loan spells have been at Rotherham and York. He has also been capped at England under 18 and under 19 level. In total he has made 59 league appearances in his career before the 2014-15 season. This season in 20 appearances in all competitions at Rochdale he has scored 3 goals, the first of his career with only 2 yellow cards. In the 2013-14 season he played 45 games, with 4 yellow cards and 1 red card. And in 2012-13 in 23 games he had only 2 yellow cards.

So in 88 games as a central defender he has only had 9 yellow/red cards, an impressive statistic. Blackburn Rovers signed Jack O’Connell in the summer of 2011-12.He went on to make 35 appearances for the Academy and Reserves sides in an outstanding first year that saw him play a key role as Rovers reached the final of both the FA Youth Cup and the Academy League. Then headed out on loan to Rotherham, York and Rochdale.

Rumours of Calum Ferguson coming to Brentford from Inverness Caledonian Thistle? Any Truth?

Media tonight are suggesting that Calum Ferguson may be on his way to Brentford Fc. His footballing statistics are somewhat curious. He is a 20 year old Canadian yet to make a first-team appearance, but has played 4 times on loan with Montrose last season, 3 starts and 1 from the bench, without scoring. More recently he has been playing in the2015 CONCACAF UNDER-20 CHAMPIONSHIP in Kingston and Montego Bay, Jamaica 9-24 January, 2015 for the U-20 Canadian.

His height is reported as 176 cms making him around 5ft 9 ins around 64kg and left footed. And he has a dual British/Canadian passport.

So, a curious potential signing, but the Scottish element suggests possibility here. Lets wait and see.
