Reflections on Barcelona and Catalan Food. A nice surprise

A visit to Barcelona is never without surprises. And in many ways this time it was the food. There are some basic facts about eating out in Spain in general that need understanding. Mainly that food is never served as hot as it is for example in UK. Lets run through my three meals. Breakfast is the same as anywhere, but the fruit quality is the best. fresh Kiwi tasting like it had been picked a few minutes ago and Oranges that tasted like …Oranges.

Lunch was an interesting affair too. The lunch kitchens do not open until 1pm. So realistically eating till 1.30 pm is fairly complex. The Catalan specials include great meats of course but also Catalan sausage served with white beans. For dinner curiously I had a Spanish omelette which was served with bread covered in a thin layer of tomato, not tomato sauce. The story is something like this that the Catalan dishes are basically the food for the poor from 100 years ago when vegetables like tomatoes were cheap. dishes are also renowned for mixing sweet and savoury foods.

Catalan dishes rely heavily on ingredients popular along the Mediterranean coast, including fresh vegetables (especially tomato, garlic, eggplant (aubergine), capsicum, and artichoke), wheat products (bread, pasta), Arbequina olive oils, wines, legumes (beans, chickpeas).

The traditional Catalan cuisine is quite diverse, ranging from pork dishes cooked in the inland part of the region to fish recipes along the coast.

The cuisine includes many preparations that mix sweet and savoury pbbhotophodto 3 photo 1 photoc 2 photod 5 phoxxto 4

Since when did 12 year olds design Renaissance Churches for their homework?

chris1957's avatarArcticterntalk.org

I am living it seems in a parallel universe and clearly was away the day, week or month, they taught us how to design a Renaissance church. This is a weekend homework item. Two versions scanned in, neither played with, the first greyscale and the second monochrome.  I remain impressed……..

Nice drawing by the 14 year old. Impressed me anyway. I did get into some sort of trouble for eating the Curly Wurly after it had been drawn. Mixed

The cakes are from the cafe in Nonsuch Park in Cheam. The beer is from the Greyhound Hotel in Carshalton and is called Ghost Ale 4.5% Adnams Brewery. Superb to them all. Just photos and no chat! The Supid Soup can be found in Estonia. The Boat Bread can be found in Merton.

Do you want to Toss the Barman? Dice game.

The Well is what i would call a Gastro Pub Restaurant in London. Excellent food and drinks. The only disadvantage is that there is no underground or train station nearby. They have started an interesting experiment. In fact they often have interesting experiments there and my visit was in fact using Tastecard which gave me 50% the food bill.

Every tuesday you can gamble the price of your drinks by rolling a pair of dice.

double 6 = free
Odd number = pay half
Evens = Pay up
Excellent idea. Love it.

Greyhounds and Odd driving

chris1957's avatarArcticterntalk.org

Being sunday, this means it is time to walk the rescue greyhounds in Hersham. To give you the context of the area. Hersham is a fairly small town and as one leaves Hersham there is a small road  ( lets call it a dead end ) down which is a huge cemetery and the lanes down which folks walk their hounds. At maximum it is single width for cars and horse-trailers and the like find it very difficult to navigate.

So we set off today with a pair of greyhounds and find a massive articulated lorry trying to drive down this lane. Firstly, where did he think he was going? Secondly having turned into the lane at the top it must surely have given him a clue that all was not right. This is not exactly supermarket land . But then he kept going for about half a mile until…

Greyhound Rescue Centre. Wimbledon Greyhound Welfare.

http://www.hershamhounds.org.uk

This rescue centre is actually in Hersham not Wimbledon but derives its name from the Wimbledon Dog Track not too far away. Rescue is maybe the wrong word. These greyhounds finish their racing life maybe aged 5 years and are mostly less than ideally or maybe not at all socialised. This centre works with them to train them and then home them. Each day anyone can go along and walk a greyhound. contrary to popular opinion then need quite short often gentle walks of maybe 20-30 minutes only and are kind docile dogs. the centre is an independent charity.

Whereas some dogs can be homed relatively quickly for others it may never be possible or take 3-4 years.

Customer accidentally leaves £6000 tip at Nando’s

This story amused me for many reasons not least because leaving a tip is actually very complex on most PIN machines and we are increasingly asked if we want to. i once left 22p as a tip by simply getting the units wrong. The whole thing is getting a little ridiculous though as the other day in the pub ordering at the bar routine drinks and paying by credit card, I was asked if I wanted to leave a tip on the machine……..

The chicken dinner below is Sri Lanka and not Nando’s by the way!
